And CERF was one of the first to leverage funds for the hurricanes in the Caribbean last September.

The Latin America and Caribbean region is increasingly impacted by natural disasters as well as population movements. In 2017, more than 15.6 million people - including 8 million children were affected by natural disasters. Hurricanes resulted in aggravating the humanitarian situation of more than 1.4 million people in Cuba, Haiti and the Eastern Caribbean islands. Mexico was severely hit by two major earthquakes in September 2017, while floods and landslides further exacerbated the needs of vulnerable children and their families in Colombia and Peru.

On 7 August 2018, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NOAA) reported Hurricane John is located 320 miles south west of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico and 345 miles south of the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, with strong wind gusts; it is expected to become a major hurricane tonight or early tomorrow. As of 25 May 2018, Sub tropical storm Alberto, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/hour, has passed over Cuba and brought torrential rainfalls (4 inches of water in 24 hours) causing overflowing of rivers and streams. According to Ministry of Interior, Flood waters swept away a bridge and damaged roads and other infrastructure, leaving many communities cut off and nearly 60,000 people without electricity. More than 51,000 Cubans have been evacuated in the affected area. 11 people reported dead, historical figure in Cuba, and 2 disappeared respectively across the affected territories.

MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA:

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Oaxaca, Mexico, a region still recovering from significant damages after a September 2017 earthquake that killed hundreds.

Flooding in Guatemala and Panama and heavy rainfall in Honduras caused significant damage to homes and crops.
National authorities have responded by delivering food and dry goods to those affected.
