Nearly 70 Venezuelan Red Cross (VRC) staff and volunteers are continuing rescue efforts and assistance to victims of last week's earthquake, which left more than 80 people dead, nearly 400 injured and 600 homes destroyed. Volunteers from Cumana and Cariaco, the towns most affected by the earthquake, set up two Red Cross field hospitals to treat the injured. They are also distributing food and water, vaccinating people to prevent epidemics and providing victims with psychological support.

Situation

1. The emergency phase is over. National and regional authorities are preparing a plan for the rehabilitation and reconstruction stages.

2. Final death toll expected to be about eighty.

3. Water, electricity and telephone service completely restored in Cumaná and Margarita. In Cariaco, water will not be restored for at least 8 more days. Population is being supplied by cistern from Cumaná.

CARIACO, Venezuela (Reuter) - Search teams pumped oxygen Friday into the mangled ruins of an office block flattened by an earthquake that killed at least 68 people in eastern Venezuela, many of them children buried in
classrooms.

''We've injected air to help anybody still alive to keep going,'' said fire chief Angel Freites as firemen fed 50-foot air
hoses down holes opened in the rubble of what was once a six-story building.

CUMANA, Venezuela (Reuter) - Rescue teams in eastern Venezuela Thursday tried to reach survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings by an earthquake that hit the Caribbean coast and killed at least 36 people.

Schools and office buildings were flattened by the temblor, which measured 6.9 on the open-ended Richter scale and officials said the death toll could rise from Venezuela's worst earthquake in three decades.

  1. The United States Geological Survey reports that an earthquake occurred in Venezuela on 9 July at 19.24 GMT (15.24 local time). Preliminary hypocentre: latitude 10.4 North, longitude 63.5 West. Preliminary Magnitude: 6.8 on the Richter Scale.

    2. According to initial reports, 36 dead (out of whom 22 when a school collapsed in Cariaco). 162 injured.

    3. Most affected areas: towns (some 400 km east of Caracas) of Cariaco, Casanai and Cumana.
