Cúcuta (oct. 18/18). El Centro de Atención inaugurado por el Comité Internacional de Rescate (IRC), organización sin fines de lucro, con el acompañamiento de la Cancillería, ofrece atención humanitaria a la población migrante de Venezuela y a la colombiana retornada del vecino país, con tres ejes: servicios de salud a mujeres gestantes y niños menores de 5 años, acciones de protección a la niñez a través de estrategias de formación a la familia y activación de rutas sobre posibles casos de maltrato y atención a mujeres que han sido víctimas o con riesgo de violencia basada en género.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 91,093 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2018 through 17 October, with 42,494 to Spain, the leading destination this year. In fact, since late September’s arrivals were reported, Spain in 2018 has now received via the Mediterranean more irregular migrants than it did throughout all the years 2015, 2016 and 2017 combined.

The region’s total arrivals through the recent weekend compare with 145,193 arrivals across the region through the same period last year, and 320,033 at this point in 2016.

Over 186,800 asylum claims have been filed worldwide in 2018, surpassing the 2017-year end figure.
Peru has become the main country of asylum for Venezuelans.

IOM and UNHCR appointed Mr. Eduardo Stein as Joint Special Representative. Mr. Stein will be promoting a harmonized regional approach in coordination with governments and relevant actors.

  • Ecuador hosts many refugees and asylum-seekers fleeing violence in Colombia, as well as Venezuelans seeking shelter from the ongoing political and economic crisis in Venezuela. As of August, more than 60,000 Colombians and approximately 250,000 Venezuelans were sheltering in Ecuador, many of whom were in need of food, health and nutrition assistance, according to the Government of Ecuador and relief actors.

With over 2.6 million refugees and migrants outside Venezuela, Latin America is experiencing the biggest exodus in its history. The outflow of people keeps increasing, while national capacities are increasingly overstretched.

In this context, several Governments seek political solutions, international solidarity and a robust well-coordinated and comprehensive regional approach to steer the operational response in support of refugees and migrants from Venezuela.

El Alto Comisionado de la ONU para los Refugiados se encuentra de visita en América Latina para evaluar la situación en la que viven los refugiados y migrantes venezolanos. Su primera etapa ha sido Colombia, donde ha presenciado tanto la salida de miles de personas como del trabajo de las comunidades de acogida.

El domingo pasado, Filippo Grandi, visitó Villa del Rosario, donde fue testigo de cómo unos cuatro mil venezolanos cruzan la frontera a diario para entrar en Colombia, en este caso, a través del puente internacional Simón Bolívar.
