PROTECTION CONCERNS

  • Security situation: In September 2017, OHCHR recorded 18 conflict-related civilian casualties: 2 killed and 16 injured.

  • Mine Action: On September 11, one civilian was killed in an explosion in Mariupol (Donetsk region, GCA), reportedly as a result of mishandling of explosive ordinances.

    According to DRC/DDG, since June 2014, 430 people have been killed and 881 injured in mine related incidents.

In response to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine countless volunteers, as well as many international humanitarian actors, including the United Nations system, national and international NGOs, and other international organizations, are engaged in the humanitarian relief effort. In December 2014 the cluster system was activated, with 7 clusters engaging in life-saving activities throughout the country. This 3W (WHO is doing WHAT WHERE) captures the presence of partners currently on the ground in each oblast.

Country Operations

In 2018, there will be Humanitarian Response Plans in 23 countries: Afghanistan, Burundi, Chad, Cameroon, CAR, DRC, Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen. The HRPs for Cameroon, Chad, CAR, DRC, Somalia, Haiti, Sudan, Nigeria (and potentially Niger and Afghanistan) will be multi-year Plans.

  • A three- day “window of Silence” observed from 21st August, enabled repairs of critical water infrastructure, restoring the provision of clean water and ensuring winter warmth for over 70,000 people including 14, ooo children in Toretsk.

  • UNICEF continued to provide access to safe water and sanitation, reaching over 43,000 people in the Eastern Conflict Area (ECA) through water- trucking and emergency repair of conflict damaged infrastructure.

Despite ongoing peace efforts, daily clashes and rapid escalation of hostilities prevail, as conflict continues to claim lives and generate humanitarian needs. Shelling of critical infrastructure, such as hospitals, schools, water and energy supply systems and houses is reported almost daily.
