Ukrainian version

The right to safety and education should be guaranteed to all children during the armed conflict, therefore, the Ministry of Education and Science supports the initiative of joining the Safe School Declaration. This statement was made by Liliya Hrynevych, Minister of Education and Science, during round table “The Safe Schools Declaration: how to protect the right to education during armed conflict” on Thursday.

Key Achievements for Jan-Mar 2017 – Luhanska Oblast:

• 32,705 children were reached by 8 education cluster partners in at least 552 education facilities of Donetska oblast (both in GCA and NGCA);

• More than 15,000 children were reached in Luhanska NGCA;

• None of education staff were reached with capacity building and no education kits were distributed in Luhanska Oblast.

• More than 6,700 children were reached in Donetska NGCA;

• Only 24 education staff were reached with capacity building by 1 partner.

• More than 122,000 children were reached by 11 education cluster partners in at least 639 education facilities of Donetska and Luhanska oblasts (both in GCA and NGCA). Another 5 partners are active in implementation but have not yet reported completions of activities for 2017;

• Almost 22,000 children were reached in NGCA out of which more than 15,000 children in Luhanska NGCA

Krasnohorivka: General Information

  • Currently 5 schools are operational under one roof, in a single school building creating difficult circumstances for learning. More learning spaces are needed immediately. Total number of children enrolled is 454 (as of Sep’16: School #1 –71, #2 –123, #3 –47, #4 –56, #5 –157);

The Global Education Cluster (GEC) 2016 Report seeks to illustrate how the work of the GEC has been particularly significant in achieving results. It presents examples of our work that demonstrate how our aim to be as field-focused and field-informed as possible has enabled education responses to be more effective, through better coordination. The report also looks at the changing humanitarian landscape and new opportunities for the field of education in emergencies (EiE), with the launch of the Education Cannot Wait Fund.

Reports indicate a total of 7 schools have been damaged since the start of the escalation on both sides of the contact line. Two schools have been confirmed damaged in GCA (one in Troykhizbenka, Luhanska GCA; one in Avdiika, Donetska GCA). School #2 In Avdiika that was damaged last night was being used as storage for humanitarian items. Immediate response has commenced for the school damaged in Troykhizbenka, with local authorities and cluster partner.

The Department of Education in Donetska oblast (Government Controlled Area) has confirmed that 5 schools and 4 kindergartens in Avdiivka are closed since Monday (Jan. 30) until further notice. A total of 1852 school children from these schools are impacted by the recent escalation in armed fighting. Plans are being made for education to continue in other locations in case of evacuation from the town.

In addition 1 school is currently closed in Krasnohorivka due to the increase in armed clashes.

The Ukraine Education Cluster works to support the authorities in ensuring access to education for children affected by the crisis. In light of the situation analysis and the needs identified, Cluster partners support education in emergencies in the areas to:
Objective 1: Improve access to quality educational services and the learning environment in schools and kindergartens
Objective 2: Support teaching and learning for population in need.
Objective 3: Support to teachers, parents and other education personnel.
