Russian version

On 22 May, one child was killed and three more injured on the way from school due to explosion in the bus in Debaltseve (Donetska NGCA). Reportedly the incident happened when children were travelling from Debaltseve school #5 after classes on a public bus. According to several reports the explosion was likely caused by detonation of a grenade carried in the backpack by one of the children. Information on this incident is yet to be verified.

According to reports from cluster partners a school bus which was transporting more than 30 children from school was evacuated during shelling at around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 in Zaitseve village (outskirts of Gorlivka, Donetska NGCA). The children were safely evacuated to the nearest safe place and no causalities among children were reported.

Attacks on schools in Ukraine during 2017

During 2017 a total of 42 education facilities were damaged due to conflict in Ukraine affecting access to education to at least 4,000 children. Schools were damaged on both sides of the contact line (GCA – 14, NGCA – 28) in both Donetska and Luhanska oblasts. There was no single month during 2017 without school being damaged with a peaks in December, May and February. Some of the attacks happened during the daytime when children and teachers were attending school, putting them at immediate risk.

• More than 15,000 children were reached in Luhanska NGCA;

• None of education staff were reached with capacity building and no education kits were distributed in Luhanska Oblast.
