With more than 1.2 million refugees, mostly from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda, Somalia and South Sudan, Uganda is one of the top-most refugee hosting countries worldwide. Due to the ongoing crisis in South Sudan, many further refugees currently cross the border to Uganda.

Nevertheless, the magnitude and the speed of influx of refugees are challenging the implementation of this progressive policy.

Bidi Bidi settlement was established in September 2016 to host the rapid influx of South Sudanese refugees, primarily arriving from the Equatoria region. The settlement population increased rapidly to over 270,000 people, making it one of the largest settlements in the world.
As of December 2016, Bidi Bidi reached maximum capacity and stopped accepting new arrivals.
