Terminology: Throughout this report the term migrant/refugee is used to cover all those involved in the mixed migration flows (including asylum seekers, trafficked persons, smuggled economic migrants, refugees). If the caseload mentioned refers only to refugees or asylum seekers or trafficked persons it will be clearly stated.

Mixed migration flows within, from and to the East Africa and Yemen region continued to be affected by a number of complex dynamics, including conflict, drought and economic reasons among others.
Migrants, asylum seekers and refugees continued to be at a significant risk of harm, ranging from abduction, physical abuse and death on land and at sea. Policy considerations remained focussed on limiting irregular migration, particularly to Europe.

Uganda has welcomed more than 800,000 refugees from South Sudan. Upon arrival they are allocated a small plot of land. Here, they can build a future for themselves. The Danish Refugee Council assists the people who have sought refuge in Uganda

17-year-old Gloria Affia fled to Uganda from Southern Sudan after her uncle was killed. She and her two siblings aged 12 and four had to flee on foot. She is now their sole guardian making it vital to find a way to provide for them. As part of a project implemented by the Danish Refugee Council, she is training to become a tailor.

The Danish Refugee Council is present in some of the worst hit areas and helps people, who are affected by the escalating ‘four famines’ in Africa and Yemen.

More than 20 million people are facing famine in the crisis currently escalating several places in African and Yemen. This has caused the UN to issue its largest appeal in the organizations history. The Danish Refugee Council is present in many of the worst affected areas and is working extensively to help.

This quarter, movement was characterised by persistent conflict, increased risk, and amplified intolerance. Internal and cross border displacement in Yemen, South Sudan and surrounding countries also increased, while returns to Somalia peaked.
