Very low maize yields for most countries in the Eastern Africa region. The maize yields for the entire Eastern Africa region are expected to be very poor for most countries and food shortages can be expected to continue. This is most notable in the main growing areas of maize in Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia with yields between -8% and -14% from the 5-year average. With the worst drought in 60 years the famine can be expected to spread out through the region as crop yields are likely to remain far below the average yields.

INTRODUCTION

The present document provides a preliminary forecast of crop yield expected at the end of the current growing season. Forecasts are provided from halfway the growing season (70 growing days). Although at that time the most critical stages of crop development have passed, the final outcome may still be subject to some change depending on how the second half of the season proceeds. Our forecasts are updated with the most recent satellite data available and distributed through email on a personal subscription basis every ten days.

11 August 2009 - In large parts of the Rift Valley yields are expected to be 15% lower than the 5 years average due to drought, with local reductions of up to 50%. Compared to the yield of 2008, a reduction of about -10% is foreseen.

11 August 2009 - In large parts of the Rift Valley Province, yields are expected to be 17% lower than the 5 years average due to drought, with local reductions of up to 35%. Compared to the yield of 2008, a reduction of about -7% is foreseen.

14 July 2009 - In large parts of the Rift Valley yields are expected to be 17% lower than the 5 years average due to drought, with local reductions of up to 50%. Compared to the yield of 2008, a reduction of about -9% is foreseen.

In Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya very dry conditions are seen in all sorghum growing areas. Due to reduced water availability and poor crop growth, well below average yields of -9% to -14 % are expected. The yields will be 5% to 10% lower than last year.

SUMMARY

Kenya and Eritrea face reduced yields of respectively -7% and -4% relative to the 5 yr average. In Sudan water availability has increased past half month and better growing conditions are seen in Darfur and Kordofan. In the regions south of Lake Victoria, yield decreases (-15%) are expected in the east of Burundi and the north of Tanzania. Slightly above average yields are predicted for Rwanda and south Uganda.

SUMMARY

Kenya and Somalia face reduced yields of respectively -5%, -2% relative to the 5 yr average. In Sudan particularly the central east-west zone is affected, including Darfur. In the regions south of Lake Victoria, large yield decreases (-15%) are expected in the east of Burundi and the north of Tanzania. Low yields in the north of Tanzania are compensated by high yields in the centre of the country, and therefore at national level the outputs may be close to average. In Rwanda slightly above normal (+2%) yield outputs are foreseen.

SUMMARY

Kenya and Eritrea face reduced yields of respectively -7% and -6% relative to the 5 yr average. In Sudan particularly the central east-west zone is affected, including large parts of Darfur. In the regions south of Lake Victoria, yield decreases (-20%) are expected in the east of Burundi and the north of Tanzania. Slightly above average yields are predicted for Rwanda and south Uganda. Low yields in the north of Tanzania are compensated by high yields in the centre of the country, and therefore at national level maize outputs are expected to be closely above average (+3%).

SUMMARY

Kenya, Burundi and Sudan face considerably reduced yields of respectively -17%, -8% and -7% relative to the 5 yr average. In Sudan particularly the central east-west zone is affected, including Darfur. In the regions south of Lake Victoria, large yield decreases (-20%) are expected in the east of Burundi and the north of Tanzania. Smaller decreases (-5%) are predicted for Rwanda and south Uganda. Low yields in the north of Tanzania are compensated by high yields in the centre of the country, and therefore at national level maize outputs may be close to average (-1%).
