GENEVA (20 September 2017) - The Commission witnessed tens of thousands of South Sudanese women and children arriving in Ethiopia just last week, after walking in some cases for months to reach safety. Like hundreds of thousands of others civilians over the last year, they were subjected to collective punishment by government forces, based on ethnicity and their perceived support for the opposition.

Hears Update from High Commissioner for Human Rights on Work of her Office

The Human Rights Council this morning opened its fifteenth regular session, hearing an update by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on the activities of her Office, following which it held a general debate, in which speakers addressed, among other things, the importance of protecting human rights defenders and the upcoming review of the Council. The Council also adopted the agenda for the session.

BANGUI (16 July 2010) - "Respect for the rights of the 200,000 remaining internally displaced persons, and sustainable solutions to their displacement, are an integral part of the peace building process in the Central African Republic» Walter Kaelin, Representative of the Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), said at the end of a week-long visit to the country.

Kaelin underscored that: "Efforts to build sustainable peace will be weakened as long as entire communities remain displaced and in despair.

Philip Alston, the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, warned that killings, rapes, mutilation, village burnings, and displacement would continue to take place unless civilian protection measures are urgently improved.
