Pupils at Outspan Primary School in Bwaise, a poor, flood-prone neighbourhood in Kampala, Uganda, are learning how to collect meteorological data – and, along the way, something about how climate change increasingly will affect their lives. Two times a day they measure the amount of rain that has fallen over the past several hours at their school grounds. They then jot down observations on the duration of the rainfall and its effect in terms of flooding of their school yard.

UN-Habitat in partnership with the Coca-Cola Foundation has launched a water, sanitation and hygiene project that will benefit over 8,000 students in 8 schools in Uganda. The project is expected to provide a model approach to improving water and sanitation in urban schools through collaboration with the private sector.
Kisumu, 11 Nov 11 UN-HABITAT announced Friday it will be expanding its successful Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Initiative to fifteen more cities in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, with support of US$4.2 million from the African Development Bank.
The announcement came during a visit to the sites by key international government representatives to see first-hand the work in Kenya's Kisumu, Bondo and Homa Bay municipalities in the West of the country.
Johannesburg, 17 Nov 09 - City managers from 18 cities across Africa met in Johannesburg in recent days to review progress of UN-HABITAT's Water for African Cities' Programme.

Lira, Uganda, 15 Jul 09 - New homes built by UN-HABITAT for teachers in the district of Lira in northern Uganda will attract female teachers in a community recovering from two decades of war and in need of strong female role models, say local school inspectors.
Helen Achan was a teacher for 15 years and now works as a school inspector. In rural areas of Lira that were badly affected by fighting between the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and Ugandan forces, Ms. Achan has found that schools have few female teachers and some have none at all.

Lira, 6 Jul 09 - UN-HABITAT Executive Director, Mrs Anna Tibaijuka last week attended a ceremony on in Northern Uganda, to celebrate the completion and presentation to the district of Lira of 64 new homes for teachers built by UN-HABITAT for 16 schools accommodating some 10,000 pupils.
The event was organized by Uganda's Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Lira District and UN-HABITAT, illustrating how the work is helping to rehabilitate the area after two decades of rebel war in Northern Uganda.

Nairobi - Concerned about the increasing environmental problems of the Lake Victoria Basin, East African Ministers of Water commended UN-HABITAT on its leadership role in the design and implementation of the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Initiative.

Nairobi - UN-HABITAT announced on Tuesday that it had appointed a seasoned Special Advisor with global expertise to assist the Ugandan government and local authorities in the former Gulu conflict zone in northern Uganda. Mr. Peter Donde, a Kenyan national, is a veteran of special projects in Somalia, Sudan, Myanmar, Iraq, Indonesia, Tanzania and Kenya.
