Thirteen people have been confirmed dead in Nfasha Trading Centre, Ikamiro Parish, Rubanda District, after a rainstorm that lasted about an hour.

The victims were swept away by running water on Tuesday at about 4pm.

Surging water brought down nine houses and carried down the valley two babies, three women and eight men where they died.

Four men were injured and rushed to Kabale Hospital.

The District Police Commander, Mr Ramathan Tai confirmed the deaths saying 13 bodies have been recovered, seven on Tuesday evening and six on Wednesday.

GULU. One morning in 2010, Esther Lakari, a resident of Panyul Village in Agago Sub-county, Lamwo District, set off to her farm to harvest food for her family. She had no idea that tragedy awaited her.

Lakari says she was walking to her garden when she had a blast and became unconscious. She later woke up at Kitgum Hospital to find her right leg amputated. She had stepped on a land mine that maimed her leg.

Lakari, a mother of five, was later abandoned by her husband and is now struggling to raise her children on her own.

Sironko- More than 300 families in Lusabe village, Bufupa Parish, Masaba Sub-county in Sironko District that were recently hit by mudslides have asked for faster response from government due to the dire conditions they are living in.

Although government opened a camp for the families at Bufupa Primary School, it lacks social amenities such as pit-latrines and clean water. The camp is about 200 metres from the mudslide site.

Caterpillars have invaded Luweero eating several acres of crops, causing fear among residents that famine could strike the district.

According to the district entomology department, there are three types of caterpillars ravaging the district. They include the tailed green, the fall armyworm and the black hairy caterpillar. The most destructive to crops is the armyworm.

KAMPALA. Uganda has been placed on high alert as the Ministry of Health investigates and monitors suspected cases of the deadly Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in the central districts of Kiboga and Nakaseke.

On August 20, the ministry received blood samples of two patients from Kiboga and Nakaseke hospital suspected Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF).

According to an August 21 statement signed by the acting Director General, health services Dr Anthony Mbonye, the two victims tested positive to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever [CCFH].

AMURU. Two people are feared dead, after a flood displaced thousands of people in Elegu trading center in Amuru district, on Tuesday evening.

According to local leaders, the floods occurred after River Unyama burst its banks, following a heavy downpour.The chairperson of Elegu zone II, Mr Kassim Akule said, about 3,000 people were affected by the flood, as it submerged their homes and business facilities.

ISINGIRO-Refugees in Nakivale Resettlement in Isingiro District are crying foul following a food crisis that has hit the camp.

The refugees depend on food given by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and harvests from land given to them to supplement food supplies.

But recently food rations by UNHCR were reduced and this has been worsened by persistent drought that has been experienced in the district.

YUMBE- Several markets in West Nile are flooded with relief items that have being sold by South Sudan refugees to market vendors who resell them.

The relief items were distributed by relief agencies like the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Livestock in Isingiro and Kiruhura districts are dying due to starvation following prolonged drought in the area.

The two neigbouring districts have traditionally been hit by drought, but Dr Bruhan Kasozi, the Isingiro veterinary officer, on Tuesday said the scarcity of water and pasture he has witnessed was the worst in the 17 years he has worked in the area.

The area has not received any substantial rainfall since April.

Kaabong- Families in Kaabong District in Karamoja sub-region are facing starvation with 11 people reported dead due to hunger in the last one month.

According to Mr Samson Lokeris, the Dodoth East MP, the 11 people died in Kathile, Lodike, Lolelia and Loyoro sub-counties.

Mr Lokeris, who also doubles as chairman for Karamoja parliamentary group, attributed the hunger to the prolonged drought that has dried up water sources.

At least 500 residents in Rwenshama Fishing Village in Bwambara Sub-county, Rukungiri District have been displaced by floods from Lake Edward.
