This revised Emergency Appeal seeks 2,670,638 Swiss francs (increased from 690,325 Swiss francs) to enable the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to support the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) in assisting 136,666 people (an increase from 30,000 people) for 12 months. The expanded operation will focus on the following sectors: water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health and National Society capacity building. It also reflects a substantial increase in the target population and number of activities to be implemented.

This update provides a brief overview on Ugandan Red Cross Society’s (URCS) actions to date through support from the IFRC and partners support. The appeal coverage is currently 228,837 Swiss francs, which is 33% of the total amount required for this operation. This support has been provided through the Netherlands Red Cross, Swedish Red Cross, British Red Cross, Japanese Red Cross and in kind support from Canadian and Danish Red Cross through delegate technical assistance.

Uganda Red Cross Society deployed the first Red Cross unmanned aerial vehicle – a drone – in Africa to monitor the situation at a vast refugee camp on the border with South Sudan. The drone footage from northern Uganda revealed that a swathe of countryside is becoming home for the hundreds of people crossing the border each day.

The Katakwi district branch of the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) Friday carried out another humanitarian distribution, for just over 2000 people, in response to forecast flood-danger in the east of the country where seasonal rains are peaking.

They are part of the URCS forecast-based financing (FbF) programme supported by the German government and Red Cross, with technical support from the Climate Centre.

KAMPALA, 9 May 2016 –Uganda has received 714,579 doses of yellow fever vaccine, worth 643,765 US dollars (over shs 2 billion), for an emergency reactive mass vaccination campaign in Masaka and Rukungiri districts.

Since January 2016, Uganda has been experiencing a yellow fever outbreak in Masaka and Rukungiri districts, with 30 suspected cases and 11 deaths. The last reported yellow fever outbreak in Uganda was in 2010 that affected five districts in the northern part of the country.
