1) Since June, insufficient and poorly-distributed rainfall has led to large rainfall deficits across the Gulf of Guinea countries and has reduced maize yields in Ghana, southern Togo and in southwestern Nigeria. Although seasonal rainfall has increased during the second peak of the bi-modal rainfall season, below average thirty and sixty day rainfall totals have continued. Average rainfall is forecast during the next week.

WASHINGTON, April 16, 2012 – Eighteen African countries lose around US$5.5 billion every year due to poor sanitation, with annual economic losses between 1 percent and 2.5 percent of GDP, says a new report by the World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program (WSP).

“The 18 African countries represented in this study account for 554 million people—that’s more than half of Africa’s population,” said WSP Manager Jaehyang So. “This is powerful evidence for Ministers that their countries will not be able to grow sustainably without addressing these costs.”

Between January and 11 march 2012, a total of 6 634 meningitis cases and 646 deaths have been reported from 14 countries resulting in a CFR of 9.7% (Figure 1). Twenty districts from 9 countries experienced menin-gitis outbreaks during the period under review as indicated in the map.

In 2010, Belgium made a record contribution to the UN World Food Programme. The Belgian contribution had never been so high, at a total of €28.6 million for 2010.

The highest contribution ever

The World Food Programme operates in 80 countries, providing food and humanitarian aid during disasters or long-running conflicts. Two years ago, Belgium contributed €18 million to the World Food Programme, and in 2009 that contribution rose sharply to €27.5 million. But last year it was higher still.
