Highlights

• No Ebola case has been reported in Uganda despite the persistent influx of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and regular trade activities across the DRC/Uganda border. This is largely attributed to the intensive Ebola prevention and preparedness efforts by the Ministry of Health and partners, including UNICEF. Over 100,000 people, including 35,000 children, were reached with messages on signs, symptoms, prevention and control of Ebola by UNICEF and the Uganda Red Cross Society.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) declared its 10th outbreak of Ebola in North Kivu, a province bordering Uganda on 1 August 2018. The outbreak has spread to several health zones in North Kivu and Ituri provinces. Beni located about 100km from the Uganda/DRC border is the current epicenter. In Ituri province the affected zone Tchomia is even closer than Beni to the Uganda/DRC border (less than 20Km). As of 1st December 2018, a cumulative total of 440 cases (including 392 confirmed and 48 probable cases) with 255 deaths (case fatality of 60%) had been reported.

In their first months, many camps rely on communal sanitation facilities – a quick and cost-effective way of meeting immediate needs and minimizing public health risks until a better solution can be developed.

Bududa- More than two months since disaster struck the mountainous Bududa District, the residents are yet to be resettled. And to some, the experience is painful.

Bunambutye Sub-county, Bulambuli District, should be their new home starting February next year after the October 11 mudslides left them homeless and vulnerable.

More than 40 people died and several went missing from the tragedy.
Yet in 2010, disaster struck the same district, killing more than 350 dead in Nametsi.

For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.

Operational Updates

• Rollout of new food assistance collection procedures: In addition to Bidibidi zones 3 and 4, Imvepi, Kiryandongo, Kyaka II, Kyangwali, Lobule, Nakivale, Oruchinga, Palabek, Rhino Camp and Rwamwanja, in November 2018, World Food Programme (WFP) began implementing new food assistance collection procedures linked to UNHCR’s Biometric Identity Management system in Palorinya settlement area in Northern Uganda.

533,387 refugees and asylum seekers in DRC, among them 52% women.

99.3% of refugees in DRC live in rural areas, and 74% live outside refugee camps or settlements.

2,949 refugees voluntary returned from DRC to Rwanda since January 2018.

Highlights

• WFP’s operational scale-up in six conflict-affected provinces is on track. Between January and November, WFP reached 5 million people, 90 percent of the 5.4 million targeted for food and nutrition assistance in 2018.

• The Ebola outbreak has possibly claimed more than 330 lives in North Kivu and Ituri provinces. WFP is providing food and nutrition assistance and supporting the overall response with logistics, aviation, and information and communications technology.
