During the armed clashes on Raja-Wau road on 16 December, armed groups held six aid workers from two national and international agencies and displaced thousands of people from their homes to Wau town.

3,159 South Sudanese refugees arrived in Uganda between the 1st and 31st of December at an average daily rate of 103. The number of South Sudanese refugees in Uganda is 986,140. Refugees continue to report fighting between armed groups, violence and sexual assault, worsening food insecurity and lack of basic services as reasons for fleeing South Sudan. Heavy rains have disrupted the Refugee response in West Nile, Causing damage to infrastructure and property and adversely affecting delivery of services to refugees.

IOM conducted flow monitoring at various cross border points, transit areas, PoCs, and IDP Collective sites across South Sudan. Flow monitoring captures the movement dynamics of the displaced population in the country. 1,604 individuals were recorded transiting through the three Flow Monitoring points in Juba City (Gumbo Park, Customs Park & Juba Port), while 143 individuals were recorded transiting through the Flow Monitoring point in Old Fangak Port and 460 were recorded transiting in and out of the PoC in Bentiu.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This report focuses on lessons learned by WFP from the Ready to Respond project, a joint UN humanitarian preparedness programme funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Ready to Respond was instigated in late 2013 by UNICEF and WFP, who were joined in 2015 by OCHA and UNHCR. DFID’s support enabled the agencies to implement a wide range of preparedness activities, aiming at reinforcing their own capacity and the capacity of partners in being better prepared to respond to disasters.

Executive Summary

In many protracted emergencies, the prevalence rates of global acute malnutrition (GAM) regularly exceed the emergency threshold of > 15% of children with acute malnutrition (< -2 weight-for-height z-scores (WHZ) or with nutritional edema), despite ongoing humanitarian interventions. The widespread scale and long-lasting nature of “persistent GAM” means that it is a policy and programming priority.
