THOUSANDS of families face starvation after rains ravaged several gardens in Kabarole and Amolatar districts last week.

In Kabarole, over 1,500 farmers in Kibiito, Kabonera, Kisomoro, Kibiito and Rubona sub-counties were affected by hailstorms on Wednesday and Thursday.

George William Manyindo, an affected farmer, said he lost two acres of tomatoes and three acres of bananas.

NTV Uganda and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) this week donated food stuffs and clothing materials respectively.

Donations from NTV included 14 sacks of maize flour, 7 sacks (100kgs each) of rice, 7 sacks (100kgs each) of beans, 5 cartons of salt, 3 cartons of cooking oil and 10 dozens of basins.

The media house’s General Manager Victor Ngei handed over the items to Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) Secretary General Michael Richard Nataka and Under Secretary General Programs and Projects Dr. Bildard Baguma.

I have received an update from Festo Majinjach, my colleague in eastern Uganda who is managing the school build in Giriki. He reported:

We have been experiencing heavy rains over the last three weeks and many parts of the roads in Eastern Uganda are inaccessible. The onset of heavy rains is causing severe flooding and mudslides but I want to reassure you that the children in Giriki are all safe.

The first instance was reported in Kaabong district in Karamoja region in early August and now Bulambuli, Kapchorwa and Kween districts have been affected.

The Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) over the weekend distributed relief items to landslides and floods victims in Bulambuli, Mbale and Kween districts. In Bulambuli district, essential household items were distributed to 672 households in Sisiyi and Buluganya sub counties. Food from the Office of the Prime Minister was also distributed to 308 households in Sisiyi S/C and 576 households in Buluganya S/C. Each household received 6kg of posho and 2kgs of beans to last for a month.

27 people are confirmed dead following a landslide that struck Sisiyi and Bulugunya Sub Counties in Bulambuli District. 16 people were burried in Mabono village, Sisiyi and 11 in Meru village, Buluganya. Five of the survivors have been discharged from hospital.

• Red Cross Rapid Assessments: Landslides have affected 1,548 households (7, 740 people). These include those whose houses were smashed and those surrounding the tragedy scene where cracks are many and intense.

15 bodies have so far been exhumed from rubbles of a landslide that occurred at 1:00am in Mabono village, Sisiye Sub County, Mabono Parish, Bulambuli district. Residents and Red Cross Action Teams (RCATs) exhumed the bodies.

The bodies retrieved are of 6 children and 9 adults. Two survivors in critical condition, Irene Namalea (38) and Paul Kacheke have been rushed to a nearby health centre by the Police.

231 households accommodating 1, 392 people in the Sub Counties of Mazimasa and Himutu in Butaleja district are logged in water following heavy rains. According to the Vulnerability Assessments conducted by Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), the heavy rains have also destroyed food crops for 592 households (4, 144 people).

URCS Mbale Region Program Manager Stephen Wamukota says the current situation may in future lead to famine as a result of food shortages.
