ROMA/PARÍS – Mientras los líderes mundiales negocian un acuerdo sobre el clima, el Programa Mundial de Alimentos de las Naciones Unidas (PMA) y la Federación Internacional de la Cruz Roja y la Media Luna Roja (FICR), junto a la Cruz Roja Alemana (GRC), han presentado un enfoque basado en previsiones que podría transformar el sistema humanitario. Este enfoque facilitará financiación para preparación ante emergencias y respuesta humanitaria antes de que se produzcan las crisis, y proporcionará los fondos necesarios para actividades que fortalecen la resiliencia.

ROME / PARIS - Alors que le monde négocie un nouvel accord sur le climat, le Programme alimentaire mondial des Nations Unies (PAM) et la Fédération internationale de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge (FICR), en collaboration avec la Croix-Rouge allemande (GRC), ont dévoilé une approche basée sur les prévisions qui transformerait le système humanitaire. Cette nouvelle approche permettra de libérer des fonds en préparation et en réponse aux catastrophes tout en fournissant les fonds nécessaires pour les activités de renforcement de la résilience.

ROME/PARIS – As the world negotiates a new climate deal, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), together with German Red Cross (GRC), unveiled a forecast-based approach which would transform the humanitarian system. This new approach will release funds for disaster preparedness and response before the crisis occurs while providing the necessary funds for resilience building activities.

Red Cross Staff receive confirmed Ebola patients at the then new Ebola treatment Centre in Kenema, Sierra Leone in September. More than 25,000 cases have been registered and more than 10,000 deaths in the worst Ebola epidemic the world has seen. National Societies continue to be on the forfront of the reponse and the IFRC, and its Secretariat have worked together to support them.

Overview

Throughout 2014, the regional office continued working in 15 countries in Eastern Africa and Indian Ocean Islands; Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles, Mauritius, Rwanda and Burundi. The regional office supported the development of 6 emergency appeals and 15 DREFs in response to floods, disease outbreaks, terror attacks and population movement in Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles, Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

Summary: CHF 116,006 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) in delivering assistance to 999,068 children from 6 months to 15 years vulnerable to a measles outbreak.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Uganda confirmed an outbreak of measles in Kamwenge district on 9 August, 2013.
