Nearly 4,000 internally displaced people in the Guluand Paderdistricts of northern Uganda - already ravaged by nearly 20 years of armed conflict - had all their belongings destroyed and were left without shelter by fires at the end of November. The ICRC and other organizations promptly brought relief supplies to some 2,000 of the victims in seven camps for the displaced. Tarpaulins, jerrycans, buckets, cups, plates, cooking pots, soap and blankets were distributed.

The past year has been a wretched one for millions of disaster victims. It dawned with the Indian Ocean tsunami, saw a hurricane season unrivalled in living memory strike the Americas, and included South Asia’s devastating earthquake. Through it all, other tragic crises persisted in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Like never before, the year stretched and tested the capabilities of aid agencies, and the will of survivors.

As the International Criminal Court issues arrest warrants for five leaders of the LRA, tens of thousands of children and their families are still living in dire conditions in the IDP camps of northern Uganda, where sanitation facilities and access to food and safe water are often insufficient.

WER is working in Northern Uganda in partnership with All Nations Christian Care to respond to the urgent needs of thousands of families who have been forced by ongoing rebel activities to flee their homes and to seek refuge in the crowded camps.
