UNHCR is extremely concerned about the tens of thousands of people caught up in or uprooted by the fighting in South Sudan. Since deadly clashes between competing factions within the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM and SPLA) broke out in Juba on December 15, more than 180,000 South Sudanese have fled their homes and some 10,000 have crossed into neighbouring countries. Continued fighting and insecurity make access to these people challenging, and in some cases impossible.

Sometimes it‘s difficult to imagine that another natural disaster could ever happen again, leaving massive destruction in its wake like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami or the earthquake in Haiti. But then with incredible force, typhoon Haiyan struck, creating a catastrophe of almost incomprehensible proportions.

Towards Egypt:

Israel reported that 36 iregular migrants had been intercepted trying to enter Israel from its southern border with Egypt in 2013 in comparison to over 10,000 intercepted in 2012, 17,000 in 2011 and nearly 15,000 in 2010. Mass migrant/asylum seeker protests were reported in December 2013 and January 2014 bemoaning a 1 year detention law and agitating for the adjudication of asylum and protection claims by migrants/asylum seekers.

  • 3705 Rwandans refugees have been repatriated, 23 refugees renounced refugees status and have been given Rwandan passports and remain in foreign countries
  • 73.54% of the repatriated passed through Nkamira TC
  • 94% came from DRC
  • 58.6 % are female, while 60.11% are under 18 years old
  • The Western province received 72% of the repatriated.

Le commandant de la 8eme région militaire des Forces armées de la RDC (FARDC), le général-major Lucien Bauma Ambamba, a annoncé ce vendredi 27 décembre que l’armée congolaise allait bientôt lancer une opération pour désarmer les rebelles ougandais des ADF/Nalu à Beni. Ces rebelles, coupables de plusieurs exactions contre des civils, ont occupé les localités de Kamango et Bwisegha pendant quelques heures le jour de Noël.

Cinq personnes ont été tuées et une autre grièvement blessée de suite dans les affrontements qui ont opposé mardi les Forces armées de la RDC (FARDC) à un groupe armé identifié comme l’Armée de résistance du Seigneur (LRA) dans les villages de Ze et Bulumasi, en territoire de Bondo (500 km au Nord de Kisangani). Les sources de la société locales ont rapporté cette nouvelle vendredi 27 décembre. Une quarantaine de civils des villages Ze et Bulumasi ont été enlevées mardi par des hommes armés en provenance de la localité de Digba, dans le territoire voisin d’Ango.

On the 25th of December 2013, the Uganda rebel group that was threatening the peace in the North Kivu attacked and took control of Kamango township sparking off a massive movement of an estimated 2,000 refugees into Uganda. The refugees cross through Bundibugyo border area and are transported into the UNHCR refugee reception centre of Bubukwanga.

UNHCR operational highlights

• UNHCR and CNR organized a joint mission in Bas-Congo Province for registration of exemption claims over the cessation of Angolan refugee status for those living Tseke zole, Mfuiki, Lundu and Matende Kimbianga. The mission met some 481 Angolan refugees (171 families). The Eligibility Committee has exempted them later in the month.

  1. MAJOR CHANGE SINCE THE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE HIP

In order to match the needs and current context in the Horn of Africa, it was decided to enable a transfer of EUR 1 900 000 from the Food Aid Budget Line to the Humanitarian Aid Budget Line.

This change aims at better reflecting the realities of the projects selected in the different countries.

Cooking banana (matoke), dry cassava chips, sorghum, millet, beans, and white maize are important food commodities for Ugandans. The staple food varies by region. Matoke is most important in the central, western, and southwestern regions; millet in the east; and sorghum in the east, north and northeast. Cassava chips, beans, and white maize are also very important for a significant part of population; cassava chips are especially important in eastern (Soroti), northern, and northwestern (Arua) Uganda. In Mbarara and Kampala, matoke is most important commodity for all households.

Kampala, 23 December 2013 (IRIN) - The draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill passed by Uganda’s parliament on 20 December would deliver a major blow to the response to HIV/AIDS if it was enacted by President Yoweri Museveni, activists have warned.

Those found guilty of homosexual acts can be jailed for up to 14 years under the new law, a sentence that increases to life in “aggravated” cases, such as those committed by an HIV positive person, or those involving minors, the disabled and serious offenders.

20 December 2013, Rome - The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have launched a joint project to tackle the global problem of food losses.

Around one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted each year, amounting to 1.3 billion tonnes - or enough food to feed 2 billion people.
