Reintegration Facility project launched in Somaliland

The European Union (EU)-funded "Reintegration Facility" project was launched on 24 April in Somaliland. The kick-off meeting event was hosted by the Somaliland Government, EU and IOM. The project will help migrants from Somaliland who have become stranded in African countries to return home voluntarily and reintegrate into their communities. It will also assist Ethiopians in Somaliland to return home and provide them with reintegration support.

Staple Food Markets in East Africa: White maize is the main staple grain consumed in Tanzania, Kenya, and Ethiopia. In Uganda, white maize is grown mainly as a commercial crop for export in the region. Imported rice is a major staple for Somalia, which mainly consume belem—the imported red rice. Tanzania is also a major producer and source of rice in the region while Kenya and Uganda are minor producers. Both red and white sorghum are produced and consumed in the region. This is an important staple in Sudan and Somalia as well as in other marginal agricultural areas of the region.

Africa Weather Hazards

  1. Insufficient rain since January has resulted in large moisture deficits and below-average vegetation conditions over portions of northwestern Angola.

  2. Poorly-distributed rain since late February has resulted in abnormal dryness across central and northeastern Ethiopia.

  3. A slow onset to seasonal rainfall across the southern Gulf of Guinea countries has led to strengthening moisture deficits throughout the region.
