Thus far, 2018 has been historic in many ways. Eritrea and Ethiopia signed a landmark declaration of peace and friendship on 9 July, casting aside decades of hostility in a matter of weeks. The announcement of the end to the state of war was met by widespread jubilation in both countries, and was matched by concrete acts of rapprochement, which included reopening telephone and air links as well as the Eritrean embassy in Ethiopia.

The African Development Bank recently convened a meeting of experts and stakeholders in the agricultural sector to design integrated pest and disease management mechanisms for controlling the spread of the Fall Army Worm in East Africa.

The Fall Army Worm or Spodoptera frugiperda is an invasive insect threatening food supplies and incomes of millions of African smallholder farmers. The multi-stakeholder, regional action plans to stop the menace of the worm in Africa falls under the Bank’s Technologies for African Agriculture Transformation (TAAT) agenda.

Kinshasa/Nairobi/Geneva, 17 October 2018 – Conflict and insecurity are hampering Ebola responders’ work, raising fear that the outbreak may reach a tipping point that sees the virus to spread to more provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and neighbouring countries, warns the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

In response to this, as well as a recent upsurge of Ebola cases in DR Congo, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is scaling-up community-level preparedness in four countries.

Highlights

-The Uganda Ministry of Health and partners have intensified preparedness and response interventions following a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Tchomia health zone, near Lake Albert where the Democratic Republic of the Congo borders with Uganda.

  • Over 2,200 reports and questions on Ebola were received via SMS from U-Reporters. Most U-Reporters confirmed that they had heard about Ebola through radio, television, community awareness campaigns and posters.

The ongoing verification of refugees in Uganda that started on 1 st March 2018, verified a total of 22,204 individuals last week bringing the total as of 13th October 2018 to 1,075,891. This represents 74.5% of the estimated target of 1.4 million registered refugees. The highest daily output was 7,538 individuals verified in a single day last week by three teams. Verification activities were suspended on Tuesday 9th October being a public holiday.

A wave of insecurity and political unrest hit the Great Lakes region early in 2016: South Sudan had plunged into yet another war, Burundi was cracking down on dissidents following a botched coup, while the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic were also in turmoil.

The wars in these countries forced an influx of refugees into Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Uganda hosts more than one million refugees from South Sudan and another 300,000 from DR Congo.

The region’s leaders are now looking to end the conflict.

Kinshasa – On 01 August, the tenth Ebola outbreak in 40 years was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). IOM, the UN Migration Agency, immediately joined the Government-led response to the outbreak in DRC and began assessing and accelerating support in neighbouring countries.
