In Syria, Government forces are advancing in Homs and expected to retake opposition-held districts in the short-term, while operations have been ongoing in other major cities, including Aleppo and Damascus. Meanwhile, infighting within opposition forces is spreading between various armed groups. Clashes are continuously reported between Kurdish fighters and al-Qaeda affiliated Islamists near the border with Turkey in Al-Hassakeh and Ar-Raqqa governorates.

KEY MESSAGES

  • In West Africa, the effects of last year's flood-related production shortfalls and civil insecurity in Nigeria continue to disrupt staple food and livestock markets. Staple food prices remained stable in the central basin in June as producers sold remaining stocks from above-average 2012 harvests to finance the current agricultural season. Cereal prices were stable or started to increase in most structurally-deficit areas as the lean season approached. Staple food availability continues to improve in northern Mali (Pages 3-5).

Overview Seventy three allocations were made by the DREF during the first six months of 2012 for a total of CHF 11,778,445. Eighty per cent of the allocations were made as grants to support response to small or medium-scale disasters, referred to as DREF operations. Twelve emergency appeals received start-up funding loans. The allocations supported response to 69 different operations by 54 National Societies.
