In this context, the European Union showed leadership and remained strongly committed to promote and protect human rights and democracy across the world.

Although at first CDKN took a broader geographic approach in 70 countries, from 2013 onwards, CDKN focused its resources on 12 priority countries: Bangladesh, Colombia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru, Rwanda and Uganda; and on one subregion: the Caribbean.

The War to end Cholera’, a new report published today by WaterAid, reveals that the countries with the highest cholera burden are the same nations with the greatest number of people living without clean water and decent sanitation. WaterAid is warning that global efforts to end cholera will fail unless the world’s poorest are given the tools they need to fight the disease – clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene.

Girls make up 53% of those out of primary school and 52% of of those out of lower secondary school, even though only 48% of the world’s under-15 population are girls, according to the Global Partnership for Education.

Today, 9 countries – Bangladesh, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda – committed to halving preventable deaths of pregnant women and newborns in their health facilities within the next 5 years.

Through a new Network for Improving Quality of Care for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, supported by WHO, UNICEF and other partners, the countries will work to improve the quality of care mothers and babies receive in their health facilities.
