In October, more than 15,300 irregular border crossings were detected on the four main migratory routes into the EU.
The total number of migrants detected on these routes in the first ten months of this year fell by 63% to around 173,000 from the same period in 2016.
The number of migrants arriving in Italy via the Central Mediterranean route in October remained almost constant from the month before, at roughly 6,700. Tunisia was the top country of origin, cementing a trend that began in the summer months.
In September, there were 13 900 detections of illegal border crossings on the four main migratory routes into the EU.
The total number of detections on the four main migratory routes in the first nine months of 2017 fell by 64% from the same period of last year to 156 000.

First report on the partnership between the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Arab States was released today in Brussels.
Entitled “ Empowering people and building peaceful societies”, the report showcases results of the many initiatives carried out by the EU and UNDP, impacting the lives of millions of people across the region.
Several large forest fires are burning in the areas of Jendouba, Kassérine, Sfax and Béja comprising of a burnt area of 4 496ha.
On 5 August, Tunisia requested assistance from the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) consisting of two aerial firefighting assets.
The Copernicus EMS has been activated to provide satellite maps for the area of Jendouba.
Local media reported that at least 23 families have been evacuated from Jendouba.

Les pays directement concernés par la route migratoire reliant l’Afrique à l’Europe par la Méditerranée centrale veulent mieux coordonner leurs activités. La conseillère fédérale Simonetta Sommaruga a échangé dimanche 19 et lundi 20 mars à Rome avec ses homologues de huit pays européens et nord-africains sur des approches communes pour relever les défis liés à cette route migratoire. The UK is helping migrants return home rather than risk their lives continuing perilous journeys to Europe, and protecting men, women and children in danger of trafficking and sexual violence, Prime Minister Theresa May announced today.
As a result of the dry and hot conditions experienced in the Maghreb in October, most sowing activities were postponed to November. Morocco, western Algeria and Tunisia benefited from rains and mild temperatures since November, which favoured the establishment and current good development of winter cereals. By contrast, eastern regions in Algeria suffered from a rain deficit during the period under review (1 October -15 January), and rainfall is urgently needed to sustain crop growth and to fill up water reserve.
