BEN GUERDANE, Tunisia (August 2017) — Youth, community members and decision makers come together this International Youth Day to voice one clear message, that Tunisian youth can play an active role in building sustainable peace in the country, despite the barriers.

Almost half of the population of Tunisia is under the age of 30, according to 2015 numbers, but many face considerable barriers to participation in decision making, particularly on issues of concern, such as security or employment.

Summary of key findings Despite specific conditions and characteristics particular to the southern route, this paper’s findings are generally consistent with the dynamics of migrant smuggling along all routes out of the Horn of Africa.
Using a combination of primary and secondary sources, as well as new data from the RMMS Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism Initiative (4Mi), the paper finds that migrant smuggling along the southern route continues to thrive and exposes migrants in mixed flows to high levels of abuse and risk.2

West Africa – Emergency aid to refugees from Cote d’Ivoire
DRC established refugee camps and provided basic emergency aid when more than 100,000 refugees crossed the border in connection with the civil war following the election.

The Horn of Africa
Drought and war escalated into a famine disaster requiring rapid response. DRC’s mobile soup kitchens provided food for almost 100,000 people every day when the crisis was at its worst.
The nationwide fundraising event ‘Africa now’ allocated DKK 5.5 million to DRC’s humanitarian activities.

More than 4000 refugees from Africa and Asia have stranded in Tunisian refugee camps. They are not welcome here – but they have nowhere else to go. The Danish Refugee Council is working in the camps to ensure the safety of the refugees while they remain there.

Edomwonvi T. Great, a 30 year old Nigerian, is fleeing for the second time. He fled when unrest in his hometown forced him to seek the opportunity of a normal life in Libya. Now he is fleeing again, this time because the Libyan police arrested him and other clandestine workers and deported them.

Here, the Danish Refugee Council helps providing shelter and relief to those in need. At the same time, preparations are underway for relief efforts inside Libya as soon as the security situation permits.

More than 300,000 people have fled the conflict in Libya. The vast majority have crossed the border with Tunisia. Here, the Danish Refugee Council is cooperating with UNHCR to assist with the registration of refugees.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the Danish Refugee Council has been cooperating with the UN on managing the refugee flow into Tunisia. The Danish Refugee Council is now involved in new efforts initiated to ensure the detailed registration of refugees arriving in Shosha camp across the border in Tunisia.

The unrest in Libya and the massive exodus to neighbouring countries continue to leave urgent needs for humanitarian aid. Inside Libya around 600,000 are expected to be in need of aid. Through the deployment of relief experts to Tunisia and Egypt, the Danish Refugee Council is now assisting the UN in the current response as well as positioning for interventions inside Libya as soon as the situation allows for.

Nearly 290,000 people have fled Libya and with 100,000 more expected to follow in near future.

The collapse of the Greek asylum system and the pressure on the borders of Southern Europe from insurgencies in North Africa shows that the EU is not geared to manage migration flows into Europe. Refugee rights must not be disregarded as a result.

More than 5000 people have arrived in Italy from Tunisia as a result of the regime's fall. In Libya, the instability could send refugees and migrants from Africa to European shores.
