Following an invitation by the Government, I conducted a visit to Italy from 30 September to 8 October 2012. During my 9-day visit, I visited Rome (CIE Ponte Galeria), Florence, Palermo, Trapani (CIE Milo), Bari (CIE Palese) and Castel Volturno. I met with Government representatives, civil society and international organisations, as well as many migrants themselves, including many who were in an irregular situation.

Il s’agit de la première visite officielle des deux expertes sur les défenseurs des droits de l’homme de l’ONU et de la Commission Africaine en Afrique du Nord depuis le soulèvement populaire qui a secoué la région dès décembre 2010.

GENEVA (26 September 2012) – The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, Margaret Sekaggya, and the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Reine Alapini-Gansou, will visit Tunisia from 27 September to 5 October 2012. It is the first official visit of the UN and African Commission experts on human rights defenders to North Africa since the popular uprising which has swept the region since December 2010.
