Italy-funded project focuses on policies aimed at addressing the underlying causes of economic mobility

16 July 2015, Addis Ababa - FAO and the government of Ethiopia today signed a partnership agreement which aims to reduce youth mobility caused by poverty, through innovative policies that will create jobs and business opportunities for young people in the agricultural sector and in rural areas more broadly.

Overcoming extreme poverty remains at the top of the development agenda in Africa and this commitment is paying off but at a slower pace. Recent evidence indicates that poverty in Africa and in all the regions of the world declined over the period 2005-2010. In Africa, the proportion of people living below the poverty line decreased to 40% in 2008 from 47% in 1990, making it the first ever reversal of the long term poverty trend (see Figure 1). However, there are disparities in the rate of decline between Africa and other regions.

AusAID, together with UniQuest and the University of Queensland (UQ), is helping to improve skills for dryland farming in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Tunisia.

Food production on dryland in African countries is particularly important to ensure food security. However, despite efforts to introduce more sustainable and productive systems such as conservation farming and agroforestry, African farming is still governed by traditional slash and burn techniques.

Addis Ababa, March 25, 2011 (Addis Ababa) - The government of Ethiopia has taken out 93 Ethiopians from Libya to Tunisia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

According to the Spokesperson of the Ministry, the Ethiopians were transported from Libya with car in two rounds and reached at the outskirts of a Tunisian boarder town.

The government along with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will help return the Ethiopians to their homeland, the Spokesperson said.

Similarly, four Ethiopians returned home from Libya via Cairo on Friday..
