Trends of Arrivals in the Mediterranean

From 20 to 26 March, 414 persons arrived by sea to Greece. Chios recorded the majority of sea arrivals (224), followed by Lesvos (72) and Leros (72). A total of 3,783 persons reached the Greek shores from 01 January until 26 March 2017.

Trends of Sea Arrivals

From 01 January 2017, 20,580 persons arrived by sea, including 3,369 to Greece (as of 21 March), 19,549 to Italy (as of 21 March) and 1,000 to Spain (as of 31 January). As of 19 March, 537 people have died or gone missing while trying to reach Europe by sea, compared with 5,022 in the whole of 2016.

OVERVIEW

In 2016, between January and December, 362,376 people crossed the Mediterranean Sea, risking their lives to reach Europe. These new arrivals are in addition to more than one million refugees and migrants who made the journey across the Mediterranean Sea on unseaworthy boats in 2015.

In 2016, the number of those arriving decreased substantially after March. Of those reaching European shores so far this year, 53% came from the ten countries currently producing the most refugees globally.

In the week from 10 to 16 October, 717 refugees and migrants crossed the sea to Greece from Turkey – a slight decrease from the 898 who crossed the previous week.

Trends of Sea Arrivals

Between 08 and 14 August, 698 refugees and migrants crossed the sea from Turkey to the Greek islands – a very slight increase from the 682 who arrived the previous week. So far in August, 1,380 people have arrived by sea in Greece and the average number of daily arrivals has been 99 compared with 60 in July. Most arrivals in August so far have been to Chios, Lesvos and Kalymnos.
As of 14 August, 161,599 refugees and migrants have arrived by sea in Greece with 48% from the Syrian Arab Republic, 25% from Afghanistan and 15% from Iraq.

Between 01 and 07 August, 682 refugees and migrants arrived on the Greek islands – an increase from the 562 who arrived the previous week. As of 07 August, 160,914 refugees and migrants have crossed the sea from Turkey to Greece, including 48% from the Syrian Arab Republic, 25% from Afghanistan and 15% from Iraq. So far in August, most arrivals have been to Chios and Samos.

Background

Since 1 January 2016, 200,000 people have arrived on European shores by sea. The great part of them arrived through the Aegean Sea before the closure of the so called Balkan road and around 50,000 arrived in Italy through the dangerous Central Mediterranean route. At least 50,000 are stuck in Greece after the closure of the Balkan route, with the extremely dangerous Central Mediterranean becoming one of the few remaining opportunities to reach Europe for thousands of people.

Greece - IOM Greece has published a report based on interviews with 1,206 unaccompanied child migrants in Greece. Some 508 said that they would not consider returning to their countries of origin because it was their intention to reach a northern European country and 282 expressed the wish to return back to their country of origin. The remainder initially expressed willingness to return home but later changed their minds and decided to stay in Greece.

Between 1 January and 31 December 2015, an estimated 1,008,616 fled to Europe by sea. 84% of them came from refugee-producing countries, with 49% from Syria, 21% from Afghanistan and 9% from Iraq. 17% were women and 25% were children under the age of 18.

Planning and Preparedness: On 2 March, the European Commission (EC) proposed a new Emergency Assistance instrument. If agreed by the European Parliament and Council, €700 million will be made available to complement Member States’ direct contributions to humanitarian response inside the EU. The mechanism would be managed the EC’s Department for Overseas Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), and implemented by partners.

Planning and Preparedness: On 2 March, the European Commission will propose plans for the use of humanitarian aid within the European Union. This will include emergency plans for Greece and countries in the Western Balkans. The Greek Alternate Migration Minister, Yiannis Mouzalas, noted that 450 million euros are needed to support refugees who temporarily require accommodation in Greece.

4,611 people arrived on the Greek islands on 17 February which was a significant increase and represents the highest arrival rate since 9 January. UNHCR expects this trend to continue over the coming days, whilst similar weather conditions prevail

Between 1 January and 16 February, approximately 11,000 asylum applications were recorded in Austria (an average 230 per day). During the same period approximately 100,000 people entered Austria.

Primarily due to poor weather conditions, in the past five days, the number of arrivals to the Greek islands remained significantly low with an average of 209 daily. As sea conditions are expected to calm and temperatures rise starting on 16 February, UNHCR expects a significant increase in arrival figures.
Fluctuation of the number of people arriving to the different Greek Islands as compared to previous weeks was observed, particularly with an increase of arrivals to Samos.

Migrants apprehended along Greece’s land border with Turkey are sent to overcrowded detention centers in Greece, Human Rights Watch said.
