In October, more than 15,300 irregular border crossings were detected on the four main migratory routes into the EU.

The total number of migrants detected on these routes in the first ten months of this year fell by 63% to around 173,000 from the same period in 2016.

Central Mediterranean

The number of migrants arriving in Italy via the Central Mediterranean route in October remained almost constant from the month before, at roughly 6,700. Tunisia was the top country of origin, cementing a trend that began in the summer months.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 157,020 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 12 November, with about 75 per cent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece, Cyprus and Spain. This compares with 341,215 arrivals across the region through the same period last year.

IOM Rome reported Monday (13 November) Italy’s Ministry of Interior has registered 114,606 migrants arriving by sea so far, this year, which is down from 164,872 at this time in 2016. That is a 30.5 per cent drop-off over last year’s totals at this time.

IOM Rome reported Thursday (26/10) that official figures from Italy’s Ministry of the Interior indicate a total of 111,240 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea this year – a drop in annual totals from this time last year by nearly 30 per cent.

IOM Rome reported Thursday (19/10) that on Wednesday, 585 migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean and will be brought to land in the next few days. These latest rescues are in addition to the 110,329 migrants and refugees arriving by sea to Italy this year, according to IOM estimates.

IOM Athens’ Kelly Namia reported on Thursday three events occurring since Sunday (15 October) off the islands of Lesvos and Farmakonisi that required search and rescue operations. The Hellenic Coast Guard managed to rescue 95 migrants and transfer them to the respective islands.

Tunis – Eight migrants have died in the wake of a collision between a Tunisian navy vessel and a boat reportedly carrying 87 migrants on Sunday, 8 October. A further 38 migrants have been rescued and approximately 41 are still missing.

The tragic incident happened in the early hours of Sunday about 54 kilometers off Kerkennah Island, Tunisia. The migrants’ boat is believed to have left from the Tunisian port of Sfax and was headed towards Italy.

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is currently providing medical and mental health care to migrants and refugees in Tunisia—in Sfax and Zarzis. Many of these patients arrive after a perilous journey through Libya, where migrants are often kidnapped, tortured, and held for ransom. In Sfax, MSF mainly sees patients from sub-Saharan Africa, among them undocumented migrants, victims of human trafficking, and other vulnerable people.
