INTRODUCTION

This report is part of IOM’s effort to provide a comprehensive statistical overview of Libya’s current migration profile. DTM Libya’s Migrant statistical information package includes the below report, accompanied by a comprehensive user-friendly dataset and a key findings one pager.

CHAPTER 1: MIGRANT STOCK BASELINE

During October – November 2017 DTM Libya’s Mobility Tracking identified 432,574 migrants* across all 22 mantikas (regions) in Libya. Migrants were identified in 99 baladiyas and 531 muhallas.

Nearly 41,500 Libyan refugees are currently hosted in Tunisia, mainly in the country’s poorest regions, where unemployment and poverty are above the national average. The number of refugees entering Tunisia remains steady. Majority of refugees are in Tataouine town; other big communities are in Medenine, Gabes and Kebili governorates.

Summary of findings:

  • Number of returning migrants to rural Tunisia is manageable. However, no systematic record taking or tracking of returnees is conducted.

  • The immediate food security status is not alarming.

  • However, the overall economic situation is rapidly deteriorating and the problem is high levels of unemployment.

  • Key issue at the Governorate level is job creation.
