HIGHLIGHTS

  • A 7.8 earthquake hit South-Eastern Iran on 16 April, close to the border with Pakistan. The impact was felt in both countries, with 14 people killed, 73 injured and two missing.

  • New and worsening humanitarian crises since 2011 have led to a considerable increase in CERF allocations to the MENA region. The largest recipients have been Pakistan, Syria and Yemen.

News spreads quickly around the world in the immediate aftermath of a crisis. Details, videos, and testimonials circulate on the web and via media outlets within seconds of a natural disaster or the outbreak of violence.

But for people in the midst of the crisis, getting information is usually much harder. Power goes down. Mobile networks fail. Local journalists can be victims and even become targets themselves, unable to report out. And survivors are often left to rebuild their lives with no effective means to communicate with those providing aid.

China's first shipment of emergency humanitarian aid for Tunisia departed on Thursday evening to help the Tunisian government with the placement of refugees fleeing its neighboring nation Libya.

The relief materials, weighing 93 tonnes, included 1,500 tents and about 20 tonnes of medicine, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website.

These supplies will be flown to the island of Djerba from Beijing, the ministry said.

The second shipment of relief supplies will be dispatched on April 9, it said.

G8 Foreign Ministers met in Paris on 14-15 March. They offered their sympathy and condolences to the Japanese Government and people. G8 countries are ready to provide Japan with every help to overcome the consequences of the disaster. Ministers thanked their Japanese colleague, Takeaki Matsumoto, for his extensive briefing on the latest developments of the situation. They expressed their full confidence in the ability of the Japanese Government to solve the crisis and paid tribute to the courage and dignity shown by the people of Japan.

The Finnish Red Cross launches an emergency appeal for funds on March 14. The Finnish Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund needs donations to prepare for helping victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. In addition to Japan, the Disaster Relief Fund is also currently helping victims of the crisis in Libya.

'The scale of the disaster in Japan is unfolding slowly and the huge need for relief aid is as yet impossible to assess.
