Summary of WFP assistance

WFP reopened its office in Tunisia in February 2011 with an emergency operation in response to the Libya crisis, after having handed over its development programme to the Tunisian Government in 1998. Since 2013, WFP has been providing technical assistance and capacity development support to the Government of Tunisia and the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco, working in close collaboration with their respective Ministries of Education to strengthen their national school feeding programmes.

MHub works on behalf of the North Africa Mixed Migration Task Force consisting of DRC, IOM, OHCHR, RMMS, UNHCR and UNODC. It promotes a human rights-based approach to ensuring the protection of people moving in mixed and complex flows to, through and from North Africa.

MHub produces knowledge on the human rights protection issues faced by people on the move in North Africa for use by policy makers, agencies, donors, public and academia, with a view to inform advocacy, policy and program development.

In September 2012, a woman known as Meriem Ben Mohamed was charged with “indecency” after she reported rape by two police officers. By speaking out, Meriem shed light on the deep flaws in Tunisian legislation and sparked a campaign demanding legal change and protection to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. “Raped and accused” became a phrase that highlighted the entrenched prejudices and discrimination against survivors of sexual and gender-based violence who, like Meriem, are often victimized and held responsible for the crimes they have suffered.

(Brussels) – Leaders of European and African countries should ensure that intensified migration cooperation does not come at the expense of respect for human rights, Human Rights Watch said today. Over 60 heads of state from the two regions will gather on November 11, 2015, in Valletta, Malta, for a two-day summit the European Union sought with African nations, to discuss the refugee and migration crisis.
