Overview

Between 1 January and 30 November 2017, 117,042 persons arrived in Italy by sea.
This is a 32% decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (173,008). In November 2017, 5,645 persons reached Italy by sea, compared to 13,581 registered at landing points in November 2016. Sea arrivals in November were slightly lower than in the previous month, when almost 6,000 persons reached Italian shores.

CHAPTER 1: MIGRANT STOCK BASELINE

During October – November 2017 DTM Libya’s Mobility Tracking identified 432,574 migrants* across all 22 mantikas (regions) in Libya. Migrants were identified in 99 baladiyas and 531 muhallas.

A new report released today by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, shows changes in the routes used by refugees and migrants to reach Europe during the third quarter of 2017.

“Over the past months, the sea route to Greece has gained more traction, sea arrivals to Italy have reduced and we have seen migrants and refugees using increasingly diversified journeys to reach Europe,” said Pascale Moreau, Director of UNHCR’s Europe Bureau.

In October, more than 15,300 irregular border crossings were detected on the four main migratory routes into the EU.

The total number of migrants detected on these routes in the first ten months of this year fell by 63% to around 173,000 from the same period in 2016.

Central Mediterranean

The number of migrants arriving in Italy via the Central Mediterranean route in October remained almost constant from the month before, at roughly 6,700. Tunisia was the top country of origin, cementing a trend that began in the summer months.

Overview

Between 1 January and 31 October 2017, 111,397 persons arrived in Italy by sea. This is a 30% decrease compared to sea arrivals in the same period last year (159,427).
Disembarkations slowed as of mid-July 2017, with monthly arrival numbers being significantly lower since, compared to 2016. In October 2017, 5,979 persons reached Italy by sea, compared to 27,384 registered at landing points in October 2016.

Geneva – IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 149,159 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 25 October, with about 75 per cent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece, Cyprus and Spain. This compares with 332,326 arrivals across the region through the same period last year.

IOM Rome reported Thursday (26/10) that official figures from Italy’s Ministry of the Interior indicate a total of 111,240 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea this year – a drop in annual totals from this time last year by nearly 30 per cent.

This compares with 324,267 arrivals across the region through the same period last year.

IOM Rome reported Thursday (19/10) that on Wednesday, 585 migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean and will be brought to land in the next few days. These latest rescues are in addition to the 110,329 migrants and refugees arriving by sea to Italy this year, according to IOM estimates.

IOM Athens’ Kelly Namia reported on Thursday three events occurring since Sunday (15 October) off the islands of Lesvos and Farmakonisi that required search and rescue operations. The Hellenic Coast Guard managed to rescue 95 migrants and transfer them to the respective islands.
