EU bolsters its support to reformers in its Southern and Eastern neighbourhoods
Brussels, 15 May 2012 - In May 2011, in the midst of dramatic changes sweeping the Southern Neighbourhood, the EU completed a major review of its European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). According to a policy of “more for more”, committed reformers in the EU’s Southern and Eastern neighbourhood would be awarded greater and broader EU support.
The Support to Partnership, Reform and Inclusive Growth – the SPRING Programme, adopted today - directly responds to the events of the Arab Spring. Initiatives supported by SPRING will focus specifically on two of the renewed EU policies in the region.
The main aim is to respond to the pressing socio-economic challenges that partner countries of the southern Mediterranean region are facing and to support them in their transition to democracy.

The EU flag now flies above the courthouse in the newly-named Freedom Square – a symbol not just of our solidarity with its people, but of our practical commitment.
