  • Over the past few weeks, a series of political demonstrations across the country have led to clashes with security forces. To date, four people have reportedly been killed and dozens injured in this context.

  • 300 Togolese have fled to neighbouring Ghana in the last few days, where they are assisted by Ghanaian authorities. The needs of the refugees are currently covered. However, considering the volatile political situation in Togo, aid organisations have started increasing their emergency preparedness.

Despite the signature of the peace agreement on 20th June, the situation in Northern Mali remains very fragile as indicated by the recent clashes between signatory parties in the region of Kidal. Estimated 62 000 people are still internally displaced (IDPs) in Mali. The surrounding countries of Mauritania, Niger and Burkina Faso still host about 138 000 Malian refugees and there is no observed trend of return.

  • Heavy rain affected the southern part of Togo in western Africa on 2 June causing floods. According to WMO, there have been recorded approx. 73mm in 24h in Tabligbo in southern Togo.

  • As of 3 June local media report one person died, two were injured and several homes were damaged in the capital city of Lome.

  • Over the next 24h heavy rain may still affect the area.

An amount of EUR 6 959 205 from the Natural disaster specific objective of financing Decision ECHO/WWD/BUD/2015/01000 has to be shifted to the Manmade disaster specific objective to cover unforeseen needs.

Overall situation

• The Mali situation continues to be very fast moving with the political context in constant evolution. Recent developments over the past days especially the decision of the junta to stand down and the consequent lifting of ECOWAS sanctions provide hope that the risk of an additional crisis in the southern part of the country will diminish.

  1. OVERALL SITUATION
  • The number of people fleeing the fighting which started in northern Mali on 17 January between the Malian Army and Touareg rebels from the National Movement of Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) is increasing. The fighting has spread from Menaka, Tessalit and Aguelhok in the regions of Gao and Kidal to the region of Tombouctou (Léré, Niafounké, Diré). This is a resurgence of the Touareg rebellion which first started in 1960-1964 and flared up again in the 1990s and in 2007-09.
