Out of school and out of luck

New Reports show that many will never set foot in a classroom

DAKAR/NAIROBI, 16 June 2014 – Despite major progress over the past decade, sub-Saharan Africa is still home to more than half of all the out-of-school children of primary school-age in the world. Moreover, millions who are in school are learning little.

Overcrowded classrooms, too few trained teachers, insufficient schoolbooks and few toilets, often without separation between boys and girls: these are some of the problems facing primary school students in Sub-Saharan Africa. A statistical survey of school and teaching resources in the region by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) highlights these challenges which undermine children’s chances to succeed in their studies*.

C’est le constat que dresse l’Institut de statistique de l’UNESCO (ISU) dans une étude sur les ressources scolaires et pédagogiques en Afrique subsaharienne*.
