This 4Mi snapshot is a continuation of the snapshot published in September 2018 on profiles and reasons for departure of refugees and migrants from West Africa. It is also based on data collected between 1 January and 31 July 2018.

During this period, 2,184 refugees and migrants were interviewed by 4Mi in West Africa, in Mali (Mopti, Gao and Timbuktu), Niger (Niamey and Agadez) and Burkina Faso (Dori and Bobo Dioulasso).

2,184 refugees and migrants were interviewed by 4Mi in West Africa between 1 January and 31 July 2018, in Mali (Mopti, Gao and Timbuktu), Niger (Niamey and Agadez) and Burkina Faso (Dori and Bobo Dioulasso). 66% Respondents are from more than 18 countries in West and Central Africa.

The average age of respondents is 29, ranging from a minimum age of 18 to a maximum of 64 years old.

Highlights in March and April

• In March and April, deportations of sub-Saharan migrants and refugees by Algerian authorities increased at the border with Mali and Niger. According to the Algerian Minister of the Interior and local authorities Nourredine Bedaoui, 27,000 Sub-Saharans have been expelled from Algeria since 2015.

• According to IOM, the number of migrants in transit in Segedine and coming out of Niger increased significantly in March and April, with 4,284 people identified in March and 4,395 in April, compared to 851 in February.

Highlights in January and February

  • In Niger, increasing insecurity in the Tillabéri region has led to an increase in internal displacement in the region.
    The number of IDPs tripled in the region in February.

  • In January, hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants were deported to the Tamanrasset camp in Algeria and transported to Arlit, then Agadez in Niger. Approximately 3,000 people were deported, mostly Nigerien but also from Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali and Guinea.

Overview

In March, the Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism Initiative (4Mi) conducted 294 in-depth interviews with migrants and refugees in West Africa, including 95 people in Agadez and Niamey in Niger; and 199 people in Mopti, Gao, Ber and Timbuktu in Mali.

Profiles

In March, 173 men and 121 women from 20 countries in Central and Western Africa were interviewed, with an average age of 29 years.

In January, the Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism Initiative (4Mi) conducted 119 in-depth interviews with migrants and refugees in West Africa, including 44 people in Agadez and Niamey in Niger and 75 people in Mopti, Gao, Ber and Timbuktu in Mali.

In January, 78 men and 41 women from 12 countries in Central and Western Africa were interviewed, with an average age of 27 years.

• The Mixed Migration Monitoring Mechanism initiative (4Mi) collects data on the conditions of mixed migration movements across various regions. It is implemented by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and the Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat.

In December, 8,428 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy by sea via the central Mediterranean route.
Nationals from Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea accounted for the largest number of arrivals in December.

In December, an estimated 383 people died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. In 2016, 5,082 people had died or gone missing in while crossing the Mediterranean, surpassing the 3,777 people who lost their lives in 2015.

In this report the term migrant/refugee is used to cover all those involved in the mixed migration flows (including asylum seekers, trafficked persons, economic migrants, refugees). If the caseload mentioned refers only to refugees or asylum seekers or trafficked persons it will be clearly stated.
