The “third struggle” for freedom in Africa

When the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the UN in 1948, much of Africa was still in its first struggle for liberation from colonial rule. Only three African countries were present at the UN for the vote: Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa. Apartheid South Africa abstained.

Ghanaian refugees in northern Togo are well integrated in communities and have no intention of returning to Ghana. In 2013, the Governments of Togo and Ghana as well as UNHCR affirmed the common pathway to “facilitate local integration of Ghanaian refugees arrived in 1982 and 1994 through the issuance of residence permits or their naturalization.”

Les zones côtières sont à l’origine de 56 % du PIB de la région. Le volume annuel de la pêche légale dans les eaux ouest-africaines dépasse les 1,6 million de tonnes, soit une valeur de 2,5 milliards de dollars à la vente sur le marché de gros.

Outre les activités halieutiques, on trouve aussi sur le littoral des villes de premier plan et des ports importants, ainsi que des agro-industries et des plateformes pétrolières offshore.

Located 350 kilometres north of Lomé, Sokodé, the second-largest city in Togo, was the epicentre of three cholera outbreaks in 2013. That same year, the African Development Bank made a €1.15 million grant to the city through the African Water Facility, to fund the "Toilets for All in Sokodé" project. There have been no outbreaks of cholera in Sokodé since then.

The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have validated the ECOWAS Plan of Action on the implementation of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) (2019-2023) in a four-day consultative meeting which ended on 2nd November 2018 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Plan of Action seeks to ensure that International Humanitarian Laws are observed during armed conflict in the region thereby protecting the fundamental human rights of community citizen.

A rising number of attacks by gunmen this year have shaken the eastern part of Burkina Faso, increasing insecurity in the area. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the attackers are believed to be linked to violent extremist groups in the Sahel.

Voluntary repatriation is the most viable durable solution for Ivorian refugees in West Africa. UNHCR also pursues local integration and resettlement, the latter as a protection tool. UNHCR in Côte d’Ivoire has been implementing community-based programmes to address the needs and improve the living conditions of returnees, refugees, former IDPs, and stateless people.

The Ghana Refugee Board (GRB) and UNHCR are working toward securing sustainable and durable solutions for Togolese refugees in Ghana.
Support for local integration will be achieved by obtaining an alternative durable legal status (indefinite residence status or naturalization) based on the favorable legal and policy framework, coupled with issuing nationality documents to prevent statelessness.

The African Development Bank called on global partners to join hands to lift one billion people worldwide out of hunger and said it was leading the way by investing US$24 billion in African agriculture over the next 10 years in the largest such effort ever.

“We are not winning the war against global hunger,” Bank President Akinwumi Adesina told an agriculture conference at Purdue University in Indianapolis on Tuesday, 25 September.
