Security Highlights:

  • In August, Nigeria witnessed an upsurge in Boko Haram attacks in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States – resulting in more than 200 security incidents. Over 125 people were reportedly killed in the attacks.
    Consequently, widespread attacks, counter-insurgency activities as well as impassable roads impeded access to people in need of assistance, especially in not-easy-to-reach areas.

Cette augmentation résulte essentiellement des activités de l'enregistrement niveau 2 des réfugiés centrafricains au Sud, des requérants d'asile dans les camps de l'Est et en milieu urbain ainsi que la régularisation des naissances dans les camps de réfugiés et à N'Djamena.

The second 2017 meeting of the Regional Immunization Technical Advisory Group (RITAG), the principal advisory group to the WHO Regional Offce for Africa took place at the Protea Balalaika Hotel Sandton, in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 5–7 December 2017. The meeting focused on progress towards regional immunization goals, maternal & neonatal tetanus elimination, polio eradication & end-game strategy, challenges facing middle-income countries, cholera control and immunization research in the African Region.

The 2017 Sudan Participatory Assessment, conducted between October and December 2017, involved 6,009 Persons of Concern to UNHCR engaged through some 385 semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, individual interviews and participatory observation sessions. This assessment exercise was conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with partners, actively supported by the Government of Sudan, to engage refugees, asylum-seekers and refugee returnees – women, men, girls and boys of di fferent age, gender, nationality and ability – to identify their needs and examine ways to address them.

More than four years after the crisis broke out in December 2013, the situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) remains extremely worrying. Since May 2017, new violence between armed groups has forced thousands of people to flee, resulting in a quarter of the population either being internally displaced or living as a refugee in neighbouring countries. The European Union supports those most affected by providing basic items and services such as food, healthcare, emergency shelter, water and sanitation, and protection of civilians.

Ibrahim Alkhali témoigne : « l’apatridie est une forme de châtiment que nous devrons combattre chacun à son niveau et à sa manière. Un enfant sans document de naissance est sujet à des abus et rejets potentiels».

DAKAR, Sept 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Nearly 100 human trafficking victims have been rescued in a major police operation in Sudan, including dozens of children forced to work in illegal gold mines, Interpol said on Monday.

Operation Sawiyan involved 200 Sudanese police officers who rescued 94 people, including 85 minors, from criminal networks in and around the capital, Khartoum, in an Interpol-led week-long crackdown last month, the global police organisation said.

  • Prolonged conflict perpetuated by Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-West Africa has spurred massive displacement and undermined food security in northeast Nigeria.
    As of mid-2018, the insurgency had displaced approximately 1.7 million people within Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states and forced nearly 226,000 Nigerians to flee into neighboring Cameroon, Chad and Niger, according to the UN.
