The UN Special Adviser on the Sahel, Ibrahim Thiaw, Monday described Africa’s Sahel region as “arguably one of the most vulnerable to climate change [with most likely] the largest number of people disproportionately affected by global warming”.

He was speaking at the start of the annual session of the Peacebuilding Commission at UN Headquarters in New York, where Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said the root causes of problems in the Sahel lay in “discrimination, human rights violations, weak governance, conflict, and the impact of climate change”.

Message from our Regional Director

Despite numerous humanitarian challenges in 2017 in Africa, there were also a number of heart-warming accomplishments. A case in point, was when a local response of Red Crescent teams—and other partners—curbed Somalia's cholera outbreak through the power of local volunteers and shared international expertise. In terms of support to our members, 36 National Societies were able to kick start initiatives that built their capacity through seed grants.

Au Tchad, nous travaillons à réunir les familles séparées par les conflits et les violences dans la région du lac Tchad. Nos équipes contribuent à améliorer les conditions de vie des détenus ainsi que les conditions d’accès à l’eau potable aux communautés affectées par le conflit dans le lac Tchad. De janvier à juin, plus de 30 000 personnes ont été directement atteintes par nos actions.

The global burden of Morbidity Study (WHO, 2010) estimated that at least 20.1 million people are infected globally by the virus genotypes 1 and 2 every year, out of which only 3.4 million people reported the disease, resulting in 70,000 deaths and 3,000 new-borns baby deaths.

Dakar/Geneva (ICRC) – The precarious security situation in Africa's Sahel region is overshadowing a massive humanitarian crisis affecting 12 million people in five countries, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said today.

Armed conflict, trans-national crime and climate hazards are causing immense human suffering, triggering an increase in intra-African displacement and migration toward Europe from the five countries -- Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad.
