This brief summarizes FEWS NET’s most forward-looking analysis of projected emergency food assistance needs in FEWS NET coverage countries. The projected size of each country’s acutely food insecure population (IPC Phase 3 and higher) is compared to last year and the recent five-year average and categorized as Higher, Similar, or Lower. Countries where external emergency food assistance needs are anticipated are identified. Projected lean season months highlighted in red indicate either an early start or an extension to the typical lean season.

  • 1 327 Nigerian refugees have arrived in the Chadian city of Ngouboua following renewed attacks in Bakagawa (north-east Nigeria), while an estimated 1 200 Nigerians are stranded in the border village of Kribatia. DG ECHO's partners are providing emergency assistance and will contribute to their registration and accommodation in the existing refugee camp in Dar es Salam, where possible.

  • Preliminary crop assessment figures in West Africa indicate that the 2018/19 aggregate cereal production will be 74.2 million metric tons (MMT), eight percent above last season (2017/18) and 19 percent above the five-year average (2013/14 to 2017/18). Although national-level production decreases are expected in structurally deficit countries, production of major cereal crops has grown significantly compared to last year, namely maize production.

Norway is providing NOK 75 million to the UN Peacebuilding Fund. A good deal of this funding will be channelled to the vulnerable Sahel region.

‘The Peacebuilding Fund works to prevent and resolve conflicts in countries affected by fragility in regions close to us, such as the Sahel. We are therefore making an additional contribution to the Fund,’ said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide.

  • According to the results of the PREGEC meeting held in Abidjan from 19 to 21 November 2018, projected 2018/19 cereal production in the Sahel and West Africa will reach 74.2 million tons, up 8 and 19 percent respectively from last year and the five-year average. Tuber production is also up 21 percent from the average and legume and oilseed production is up 29 percent. This will result in good household food availability and diversity, which will improve consumption and income through the sale of part of the harvest.

In 2018, Belgium earmarked 170 million euros for humanitarian aid. This amount went mainly to helping refugees and people in need in their own region. The most important contribution went to the humanitarian catastrophe in and around Syria. An increasing share is going to humanitarian innovation. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation made this announcement on the occasion of International Human Solidarity Day.
