Following a decision by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Kai Mykkänen, Finland granted an additional EUR 14 million for humanitarian crisis areas across the world in late December 2016. Emergency relief will be directed at the southern African region that suffers from El Niño-induced drought, Yemen, South Sudan, Kenya, Chad, Iraq, Northern Nigeria, and Afghanistan’s refugee situation. This aid will be channelled through the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

In the last humanitarian aid funding allocation of the current year, Finland has awarded with the decision by the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Lenita Toivakka a total of EUR 17.4 million to two UN organizations – The World Food Program WFP and the refugee organization UNHCR – for their work concerning long-running and underfunded crises in Middle East and Africa.

In its autumn distribution of humanitarian aid, Finland has granted 15.7 million euros for the worst crisis sites. Many of these targets are seriously underfunded and have gone unnoticed because of other crises ongoing at the same time. Development Minister Sirpa Paatero made a decision on the matter on the international United Nations Day, 24 October.

Finland will donate additional EUR 1.5 million in humanitarian assistance for the Central African Republic, where about a half of the population is in need of humanitarian aid. More than 560,000 people have been forced out of their homes. Since the beginning of the conflict, approximately 370,000 people have fled to the neighbouring countries.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, by decision of Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala on 19 June, has granted a total of four million euros in humanitarian assistance to the Syrian crisis and the Sahel region.

The humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in Syria continues to be severe. Approximately 6.8 million people, about half of them children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. The number of refugees has reached about 1.64 million and about 4.25 million people are internally displaced.

Finland directs humanitarian assistance to Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean.

The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs will allocate EUR 23.6 million of emergency aid by the end of this year. The new decisions made by Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala will raise Finland’s total humanitarian contribution to more than EUR 90 million in 2011. Alongside the alleviation of acute distress situations, Finland lays emphasis on finding long-term solutions.

Finland directs humanitarian assistance to Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

By decision of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted 47.3 million Euros from the early 2010 humanitarian aid appropriations to the victims of crises and natural disasters in the world. The current sum is in addition to the 5.4 million Euros allocated in January for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The President of the Republic has today, 13 March, decided on Finland's participation in the UN operation in Chad and on support measues for the ISAF mission to secure the arrangement of elections in Afghanistan.

Finland will take part in the military component of the UN mission in Chad and the Central African Republic by deploying about 80 soldiers.

On Wednesday, 25 February, the President of the Republic and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed Finland's participation in the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT). The mandate of the European Union military crisis management operation EUFOR ending on 15 March 2009 will be transferred to the UN.

By decision of Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted humanitarian aid appropriations for the first part of the year, totalling 52.2 million euros, to people suffering from the world's crises. Finland's entire humanitarian aid budget for 2008 totals 63.2 million euros.

The purpose of humanitarian assistance is to save human lives and alleviate human suffering caused by crises stemming from natural disasters or political conflicts. This year, assistance is needed especially by the victims of long-term crises.
