Editorial

COOPI’s worldwide operations increased once again in 2017. It means also that the number of humanitarian crises we have tried to respond to as effectively as ever has increased. We have decided not to limit ourselves to intervening when there is an emergency, only to then move on elsewhere; instead, we remain alongside the communities hit by those emergencies in the medium-to-long-term, so as to help them overcome their critical issues and launch a reconstruction process.

With the crisis entering its ninth year and showing no signs of abating despite recent efforts, 10.7 million people continue to be in urgent need of life-saving assistance across north-east Nigeria, far-north Cameroon, Western Chad and south-east Niger. Nearly 2.4 million people are displaced with fresh waves of violence and human rights abuses resulting in thousands arriving into congested sites on a weekly basis.

LAKE CHAD CRISIS OVERVIEW

The Lake Chad Basin (LCB) is facing one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world today; approximately 17 million people are affected by the conflict in the region1 . Since 2009, an area spanning four countries in Central and West Africa has been affected by the violence perpetrated by the Nigerian extremist group Boko Haram.

In the ensuing years, the insurgency group has turned to violent attacks against local populations, causing an unprecedented protection crisis.

The Lake Chad Basin millions of people are facing one of the largest humanitarian crises. Since 2009 violence perpetrated by the Nigerian extremist group Boko Haram in Central and West Africa have never ended and attacks against local population became too usual.

The crisis became complex and unprecedented and today the humanitarian assistance is difficult and for this reason more necessary: food insecurity, loss of homes, weak infrastructure, limited resources, especially for hundreds of thousands people remain trapped by the conflict without access to humanitarian assistance.

Background

Kornoi is one of the three localities of Dar Zaghawa (Um Buru, Tina and Kornoi). Kornoi locality identified as the main return area and to assess the situation of the returnees, several return monitoring missions conducted during 2015 to the area and mission reports shared with all stakeholders, which helped a lot in planning of many interventions in Kornoi locality,

This mission came as recommendation of the previous missions to visit the remaining areas in the locality in special those can be reach from Um Buru.
