Italy has allocated 6.3 million euros for emergency actions in the four countries of the Lake Chad Basin, namely Nigeria, Cameroun, Chad and Niger, which are facing the consequences of Boko Haram's radical and extremist violence. The actions will be carried out by Italian civil society organisations and other non-profit stakeholders working in the four Countries.
The foreign ministry will be participating through its Directorate General for Development Cooperation, in the humanitarian mission "Ridare la luce 2009" (Bring back the light), to be held in the Republic of Mali from 24 November to 10 December 2009 for the treatment of the people of the Sahel desert for eye diseases and, beginning this year, for general surgical operations and the exchange of knowledge on new operating techniques between Italian and Malian doctors and nurses.

Following the Conference on Darfur, held on June 25th 2007 in Paris, the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Massimo D'Alema has decided to provide humanitarian aid to the Darfur's refugees in Chad in the frame of the relief initiative co-ordinated by the French Government.
The decision of the Government of Italy represents a first act of support for the French initiative and consists of a donation of 300.000 euros to the High Commissioner for Refugees and in three humanitarian flights with emergency aid for the 250.000 persons living in the camps of eastern Chad.

A second humanitarian flight landed yesterday
in Chad carrying supplies earmarked by the Italian Development Cooperation
for the local populations.
The delivery included 7.6 tonnes of emergency supplies valued at approximately 101,600 euros.
On hand to welcome the humanitarian flight in N'djamena was Honourary Consul Ermanna Favaretto, who delivered the supplies to the local authorities for subsequent distribution throughout the territory.
