The nine year conflict between Boko Haram, ISIS-West Africa, and the governments of the Lake Chad Basin region continues to threaten civilians and their livelihoods. This extremist-related conflict restricts humanitarian access and has displaced 2.4 million in the region. In total, there are an estimated 10.7 million in need of humanitarian assistance in the region, with nearly half (5 million) needing emergency food assistance.

Approximately 4.5 million people are food insecure in the Lake Chad Basin region. However, this is a decline from a height of 7 million last year.

Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa related conflict continues to restrict humanitarian access in the Lake Chad Basin region, where an estimated 10.7 million people need assistance and 2.4 million are displaced. At least 7.2 million people need food assistance, especially in inaccessible areas in northeast Nigeria where an estimated 50,000 are experiencing famine-like conditions. Short of funds, in June the World Food Program decreased its target to 1.36 million people to receive rations in northeast Nigeria, from the original 1.8 million.

Boko Haram-related conflict has led to a severe humanitarian emergency in the Lake Chad Basin region and potential famine in inaccessible areas of northeastern Nigeria. At least 7 million people in the region are in need of food assistance. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) and trapped populations are at greater risk due to insecurity and poor or degraded infrastructure which impede aid delivery. There are currently 2.6 million people displaced across the region.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) launched in 2000 sought to halve by 2015 the proportion of the world’s population without sustainable access to improved water sources and sanitation facilities. By 2015, about 2.6 billion additional people had gained access to improved water sources since 1990, the baseline year for the MDGs, thus meeting the MDG target. However, 663 million people still do not have access to improved water sources.

Approximately 12 million people lived in protracted refugee situations* around the world at the end of 2015, comprising nearly two-thirds of the global refugee population. A protracted refugee situation exists when 25,000 or more refugees originating from the same country have sought refuge in another country for at least five consecutive years.

*These numbers include people in a refugee-like situation

Instead of the usual depiction of conflicts as countrywide and defined by national boundaries, this map displays distinct conflict-affected areas in Africa as sub-national and transnational pockets of insecurity, violence, and armed aggression.  Areas of conflict were drawn around locations of reported conflict incidents in 2007 and 2008, as well as concentrations of internally displaced persons and cross-border rebel bases and refugee camps in neighboring countries.
