A. Situational context

2,184 refugees and migrants were interviewed by 4Mi in West Africa between 1 January and 31 July 2018, in Mali (Mopti, Gao and Timbuktu), Niger (Niamey and Agadez) and Burkina Faso (Dori and Bobo Dioulasso). 66% Respondents are from more than 18 countries in West and Central Africa.

The average age of respondents is 29, ranging from a minimum age of 18 to a maximum of 64 years old.

Security Highlights:

  • In August, Nigeria witnessed an upsurge in Boko Haram attacks in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States – resulting in more than 200 security incidents. Over 125 people were reportedly killed in the attacks.
    Consequently, widespread attacks, counter-insurgency activities as well as impassable roads impeded access to people in need of assistance, especially in not-easy-to-reach areas.

La toute première réunion de la commission tripartite à laquelle ont participé plus de 20 délégués de la République du Tchad, de la République du Soudan et du HCR, l’Agence des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés a décidé, vendredi 14 septembre 2018 à N’Djamena, de continuer à faciliter le retour volontaire des réfugiés soudanais du Tchad. Conduit en toute sécurité et dignité, il s’agit d’une solution durable à la situation d’exil prolongée des soudanais au Tchad.

La population totale des réfugiés et demandeurs d'asile est passée de 446.091 personnes (fin du mois de juillet) à 449.748 à la fin du mois d'août 2018 représentant une augmentation globale de 0.8%. Cette augmentation résulte essentiellement des activités de l'enregistrement niveau 2 des réfugiés centrafricains au Sud, des requérants d'asile dans les camps de l'Est et en milieu urbain ainsi que la régularisation des naissances dans les camps de réfugiés et à N'Djamena.

The 2017 Sudan Participatory Assessment, conducted between October and December 2017, involved 6,009 Persons of Concern to UNHCR engaged through some 385 semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, individual interviews and participatory observation sessions. This assessment exercise was conducted by UNHCR in collaboration with partners, actively supported by the Government of Sudan, to engage refugees, asylum-seekers and refugee returnees – women, men, girls and boys of di fferent age, gender, nationality and ability – to identify their needs and examine ways to address them.
