Executive Summary [English]

Rainfall anomalies during the 2017 year and an ongoing economic crisis have negatively impacted the livelihoods of rural households in Chad, including agriculture, livestock, and nonfarm income activities. This has driven a deterioration in food and nutrition security across the majority of Chad’s Sahelian belt. In some regions, the rainy season was characterized by prolonged dry spells and an early end, which resulted in a 2.1% decrease in national cereal production compared to the five-year average and 5.1% reduction compared to last year’s levels.

Overview

The Early Warning Early Action initiative has been developed with the understanding that disaster losses and emergency response costs can be drastically reduced by using early warning analysis to act before a crisis escalates into an emergency.
Early actions strengthen the resilience of at-risk populations, mitigate the impact of disasters and help communities, governments and national and international humanitarian agencies to respond more effectively and efficiently.

José Graziano da Silva, FAO Director-General

10 Jul 2018 description

Nearly 6 million people are estimated to be severely food insecure during the lean season (June‒August). Unless urgent action is taken, the number of children with severe acute malnutrition is likely to rise from 1.1 to 1.6 million.

Joint scale-up

FAO, UNICEF and WFP are working together with governments and partners to address the immediate needs as well as longer-term structural challenges. Assessment missions are regularly undertaken to revise the programme to target those most in need and adjust to the evolving realities.

Highlights:

• Poor rains in 2017 affected livestock across the pastoral areas of the Sahel.

• Persisting insecurity hampers access of animals to the grazing areas in northeastern Nigeria, northern Mali and the Lake Chad Region.

• Large concentrations of livestock in safe areas are resulting in shortages of pasture and depressed prices of livestock products and incomes for pastoralists.
