Overview of Programs in 2009

In July 2009, CAM started a new program in the eastern part of Chad. This project aims at improving access to primary health care for the Darfur refugee and local host populations inside and around Iridimi and Touloum camps while reinforcing the Ministry of Health and local communities' capacities.

This new program is funded by United Nations High Commissionner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the US State Department - Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migrations (BPRM), a new partner for CAM.

CAM has been working in Eastern Chad in the camps of Iridimi and Touloum with Darfur refugees since June 2009. Following the withdrawal of MSF Luxembourg, CAM took on the running of primary health care activities of the health centers inside the camps. This has been possible thanks to funding from UNHCR and PRM.

The activities currently implemented reflect those originally established by MSF over several years, although given CAM's post-crisis focus enhancing the sustainability of the program in the long term is a clear priority.

With financial support from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the US Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), we have begun a primary health and a community health education program in Iridimi and Touloum, two refugee camps with roughly 46,000 residents. Sudanese refugees will not be the only beneficiaries: Healthcare will also be provided to the neighboring …
