01 Dec 2005 description

The Ouaddaï and Wadi-Fira regions in the eastern part of Chad cover nearly 120,000 square kilometers and are home to some 700,000 people. Situated in the Sahel zone, this area receives only between 250 mm and 670 mm of annual rainfall, and most of its people are nomadic or semi-nomadic. Human development index levels for the region are quite low, and poverty is severe - average accessibility rates for safe drinking water, for example, range between 1.4% and 3.0%.
