Overview

This weekly bulletin focuses on selected acute public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African Region. The WHO Health Emergencies Programme is currently monitoring 49 events in the region.

This week, three new events have been reported:

  • Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in Mauritania and cholera in Burundi and Chad. This week’s edition also covers key ongoing events, including:

• Cholera in Kenya

• Hepatitis E in Niger

• Floods/mudslide in Sierra Leone

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 1,323 Ebola cases and 729 deaths in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, and Guinea. Highest number of confirmed cases in Sierra Leone.

  • One out of every three refugee children from the Central African Republic suffers from acute malnutrition.

  • UNICEF reports that one in every three primary school children are out of school in northern Nigeria due to the insurgency.

  • Cameroon currently hosts 230,000 refugees from both Central African Republic and Nigeria.

Depuis 6 ans, l’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre sont en sursit permanent : les épidémies de choléra se multiplient sur le continent, entrainant avec elles leurs millions de morts chaque année. Meurtrière mais aussi extrêmement rapide, l’épidémie est la première cause d’intervention d’urgence chez Action contre la Faim, au même titre que les catastrophes naturelles.

FREETOWN/DAKAR, 12 juillet 2012 (IRIN) - Après des années d'épidémies cycliques de choléra en Afrique de l'ouest, les règles en matière d'hygiène et d'assainissement de l'eau sont généralement peu respectées dans la plupart des pays touchés. Cependant, dans certaines régions, la lutte contre le choléra est plus efficace que par le passé. IRIN a discuté des solutions nouvelles et classiques existantes en matière de prévention du choléra, avec les organisations humanitaires et les gouvernements concernés.

FREETOWN/DAKAR, 10 July 2012 (IRIN) - After years of cyclical cholera outbreaks in West Africa, water and sanitation standards are still notoriously low in most of the affected countries, but in some areas the cholera response is working better now than in the past. IRIN spoke to governments and aid agencies about innovations and traditional wisdom for preventing cholera.

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 30 (Reuters) - African countries can save more lives with free health care and rapid diagnostic tests to fight malaria, one of the world's deadliest diseases, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said on Tuesday.

In a report on its work in Sierra Leone, Chad and Mali, the international medical group said there are effective tools to treat malaria but a limited number of patients have access to them and broader strategies were needed to fight the disease.

Dr. Lynne Jones, IMC's technical adviser on mental health, and IMC psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Asare, will be presenting on their work in Sierra Leone. Also from IMC, psychiatrist Dr. Mustafa Elmasari, who is based in Chad, will discuss IMC's work initiating mental health services for Sudanese refugees there.
