  • The seasonal rainfall has been globally average to above average (Figure 1 and Figure 2) over most of the region, but September rainfall has been below average over most of the Sahelian zone with pockets of severe deficits in areas of Senegal, Mauritania, Niger and Chad.

Poursuite d’une résurgence en Mauritanie et possible développement d’une autre résurgence au Soudan

Une résurgence du Criquet pèlerin se poursuit dans l’ouest de la Mauritanie, où des groupes d’adultes sont présents et des pontes et des éclosions en cours, entraînant la formation de groupes et de petites bandes de larves des premiers stades. Des opérations de lutte terrestre sont en cours et près de 6 500 ha ont été traités depuis le début de la campagne.

Outbreak continues in Mauritania and could develop in Sudan

A Desert Locust outbreak continues in western Mauritania where groups of mature adults are present, and egg-laying and hatching are underway, causing early instar hopper groups and small bands to form. Ground control operations are in progress and have treated nearly 6,500 ha since the beginning of the campaign.

In Morocco, solitarious adults are present in the Adrar Settouf area of the extreme south as well as further north along the southern side of the Atlas Mountains.

An outbreak develops in Mauritania as summer rains end and vegetation dries out

An outbreak has developed in western Mauritania and seasonal rains have ended in the Desert Locust summer breeding areas in the Sahel of West Africa and Sudan. As annual vegetation continues to dry out, Desert Locusts are concentrating and forming groups in those areas that remain green. This is most evident in Mauritania but it is also occurring on a smaller scale in northern Niger, northeast Chad and northern Sudan.

4 March 2016 – With a “triple peril” of environmental degradation, poverty and insecurity facing the Sahel, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today during a visit to Mauritania that improving the situation in the region is a top priority for the United Nations.

• The Sahel region has undergone significant and widespread rainfall deficits, leading to significantly below average vegetation levels.

• Worst affected areas are Senegal, southern Mauritania, eastern Niger, NE Nigeria and central Chad • There was some recovery from late July, in particular in Niger and Chad. However, Senegal and Mauritania remained affected by persistent rainfall deficits.

  • In general, harvests across the region will be average to good. With these ongoing harvests, most households have an adequate diet and are able to meet their nonfood needs with income from the sale of cash crops and wage labor.
    Most areas of the region are currently experiencing Minimal (IPC Phase 1) food insecurity.
